Hi
2 questions on pyvon ...
1) the English page has pyvon-1.0a.tgz for download, while the French page
as pyvon-1.1.tgz for download. Is this jsut a language difference, or ?
2) I downloaded pyvon-1.0a.tgz and installed by running the script, and this
appeared to go ok. But pyvon won't start. It brings up the empty xstreams
window for a split second, then vanishes. What do I need to do to fix
this?
(BTW, the PC is running MDK 9.0, with python 2.2.1 and pyvon 0.99 ran fine.)
TIA
Peter

Thanks for the reply.
I tried the rpm - it gives heaps of warnings about user fabien doesn't
exist, then flashes an error message %postscript or something. Package
manager says it is intalled, but it won't run. Gives the same result as
before, just briefly brings up the Xstream window, then vanishes.
Pyvon 0.99 was going fine. All I have done since is run the 1.0a install.sh
script and the 1.1 rpm.
TIA
Peter

Whatha! I'm running MDK 9.0 (with KDE updated via cooker to 3.1) and it
works fine. I will need to see the full output of the install to know what
is wrong. Did you run the rpm command as root, from a shell? Did you run
pyvon as root from a shell? What messages did you get?

Hi, thanks for taking the time to help out with this.
The install script shows a whole pile of file names, but no errors. I ran
this as root (su from a Konsole in KDE 3.0.3).
Running the rpm command as root gives a stream of messages like this ...

First time round, I clicked on the rpm in Konqueror, and package manager
gave similar messages, plus one about an error before it dissappeared. (Is
there a way of getting package manager messages back? eg an install log)
Just now, I ran the rpm again as root in a Konsole to get the above
messages. So I've tried it with package manager and from command line.
Runing pyvon as root gives a similar result to before (ie Xstream window
flashes up then disappears), except this is displayed momentarily ...
italie ###########################
I notice /usr/local/pyvon has these files
c97.py d20.py d25.py pyvon res.py
and that res.py runs d25.py .
TIA
Peter

Hmmm, that is odd, Xstrean does come up first and the main pyvon window does
take a little while to pop up. I saw the italie message the first time I
ran it too, but after a short wait I did get the main window.
From those messages I can't tell what is wrong with your system.

What happens when you run it from a console
python /usr/local/pyvon/d25.py
any error messages?

good idea - I never thought of that
this gives a message;
$ python /usr/local/pyvon/d25.py
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/local/pyvon/d25.py", line 2234, in ?
menu1.add_command(label=x[:-4],command= lambda nom=longname :
insert_example(nom),font=police)
NameError: name 'menu1' is not defined
$
Not knowing python, this doesn't mean a lot to me.

Does this dir exist?
/usr/local/pyvon/Insert
What does it have the sub dirs with the files for the insert menu?

Yes, that directory exists. It contains these sub directories;
$ ls | grep -i /
00 - Scene templates/
10 - Headers/
20 - Include files/
30 - Statements/
40 - Expressions/
50 - Misc. Directives/
60 - Animation/
70 - Colors/
80 - Special effects/
90 - Cameras/
A0 - Light sources/
B0 - Shapes/
C0 - Shapes (shorter versions)/
D0 - Shape modifiers/
E0 - CSG operations/
F0 - Material/
G0 - Textures/
H0 - Patterns 1 (a-m)/
I0 - Patterns 2 (n-z)/
J0 - Pattern-Texture attributes/
K0 - Transformations/
Sundry/
$
These sub directories have heaps of .txt, .pov and .inc files. The
20-Include directory has many sub directories; arrays.inc, chars.inc, etc.
I don't know what files are needed for the insert menu, but these
directories have lots of small text files containing the sort of things
you'd expect to be inserted when you pick an item from the insert menu.
The error message points to line 2234, "menu1 is not defined".
Is this menu1 defined in line 2229? 'cos if it is, then this definition is
subject to the if in line 2228 and maybe that is related to the problem?

If I take the menu1= statement from line 2234) and put it before the if
statement above it
if os.path.isdir(longname) :
then pyvon starts ! This is obviously not the fix, as the insert pull down
menu disappears as soon as I select it, making it v difficult to use. But
the other pull down menus function ok.
Sorry, I don't know programming (not even python) but hopefully this gives
enough of a clue to someone who does know about this stuff.
