I am sure I read that poser hair is not usable with Povray because it
just outputs guide hairs. Well I have had a thought or two and I would
like to experiment but as I've just started to use Poser 5 I cannot
design straight hair.
Can anyone give me some pointers, please?

The dynamic hair that comes with P-5 doesn't work well with POV-Ray, but
I've had good luck with the hair from Mr. Maya's website. Possible that
anything that isn't dynamic hair might work well.

Do you mean sculpting straight-looking dynamic hair or designing regular,
mesh-based, non dynamic hair ?

I could not find his site. I have used hair by Mr Kozaburo to good
effect especially when combined with Masa's PAE

It's not really that hard - you just go into the hair room and change the
parameters to have no gravity.
Take a look at the mohawk in the Poser Folder for a good general straight
hair.
Now with cloth, on the other hand, it turns out you cannot turn gravity off
(irritating).
I've done several spike type hair cuts that don't look too bad, although the
effect when moving is a bit weird (I think there's too much inertia or
something).

Yes you might just be onto something there :-)
Seriously I phrased the question poorly, again thanks for thinking
about it. I wanted hair that hangs straight down.

Or I misinterpreted - for hair that hangs straight down, I think you just
add some more gravity to the sim and make sure you don't add any clumpyness.
I was messing around with a straighed haired woman with about four foot
hairs that didn't look too bad, once the hair 'draped' down. You have to
give the sim some time.
But it *is* a sim, so the hair starts out 'straight out' and then falls
down, per the gravity effect. You can fiddle with the initial position, but
given that the hair grows in the direction of the normals, gravity works
better than the 'down' or 'back' controls because each normal is a bit
different. (been a while since I was in the hair room, I hope I got the
names right).
My real problem is that there is no good way to export the hair to POVRay
currently, that I know of, so I didn't do too much more messing with it.

Yes that is the problem. I'm thinking of going back to Poser 4
as I only use the models as meshes in PovRay. I did notice that if you
export the hair as 3DS, PoseRay will turn them into a mesh. I had
thought that that might be a solution

Oh, interesting - I don't have a way to import .3ds I don't think, but if it
was a multi frame export, maybe dynamic hair would stand a sporting chance
...
