My client is currently looking for extremely bright developers who have
a passion for solving complex problems. You will be naturally
inquisitive and have a logical mind.
Requirements:-
- 3 years experience in an engineering environment using object
orientated (OO) languages in at least on of the following; C++, PHP,
Java and with at least one years experience coding database-driven
applications (preferably MySQL) in PHP using object orientated style.
You will have a degree in computer science or a similar relevant degree
to at least 2.1 level from a world ranking university.
If you do have the required experience then please forward your cv to
[I'm not telling you].
So what do we think, people? Given that I have 0 years' experience in an
engineering environment, and that I have outdated experience with Java
and minimal experience with C++, so I qualify? (Also - I wonder where on
the face of the Earth this position *is*?)

Honestly I don't think you qualify for the languages in question (as far
as I know you), but it wouldn't be the first time that people get hired
even though they don't fully qualify...

If you don't want to tell because someone here is more qualified and
might also apply, you're making a mistake. Think again before asking why.

Can't hurt to try. I applied for a similar job once upon a time, and
while I didn't get the job (because I lacked engineering, Java, and C++
experience), a few years later the same guys interviewed me for a job I
*did* get, and I don't doubt that part of the reason was that they had
met me already. In the first interview, they felt I was capable in my
area of expertise, but the expertise just wasn't what they were looking
for at the time.

You could always ask them.....
It might be a virtual office, for that matter - letting you work from
home.

That's wasn't particularly my reasoning. It's just extranuous
information for the purposes of this discussion, that's all. ;-)
As to that being a "mistake"... I'm not sure I follow.

That was more or less my assessment too.
If I can found out where the hell this job is, I might consider
applying, but I'm probably wasting my time.

I know you're not too fond of the languages, but it might be worthwhile
to shift your free time programming into something like Java/C++ for a
while so you can more confidently apply to this sort of job. Releasing
some sort of small project written in one of these languages online (or
contributing in a meaningful way to an existing open-source one) which
you could point to on a resume couldn't hurt either.

Do you meet or almost meet at least 50% of the above? If so, I would give
it a shot, but beware at this moment in time there are limited jobs
available, so I would imagine demand will be quite high. Do not be
surprised if you do not hear back.

I spent several years using Java. I spent a month or so on C++. I've
never even seen PHP.

We did some database stuff during my degree. I have no experience with
PHP or MySQL.
