No, no - Linux is *designed* for nerds, by nerds. Today it has lots of
shiny front-ends, but as soon as something happens under the covers that
the GUI isn't expecting or doesn't handle correctly, you're straight
back into nerd land. :-)

I'm definitely not as far as you, but I don't think the game is easy, OR
all the weapons powerful.

The sniper rifle, of course, is insanely effective combined with Cloak
:) Cue Bishop from UT: "One shot, one kill!"

My latest "fun" tactic (which I've actually found quite effective): Turn
speed on, run right up to the enemy soldiers, grab them by the throat,
and run out before the others can shoot you! It's like I'm the human
counterpart to the flying spaghetti monster who's been grabbing my guys :)

I'm glad it's not just me!

...except that, for the most part, the sniper rifle doesn't seem to kill
things. :-(

(One of the guys from my clan claims you have to hit them in the head
for it to work. Also, the guys in those lookout posts have a habit of
randomly ducking even though they can't possibly know I'm there...)

...except that you can only ran 20 yard before you run out of energy.
And by that point God-knows how many enemies will be firing rocket
launchers and shotguns and sniper rifles and SMGs at you, so you'll be dead.

I do find it kind of amusing how you can grab somebody by the throat and
they just *stand* there, not attempting to escape. I guess I do have it
on the very lowest difficulty setting...

I've killed everyone I've shot at with it :O

Don't run constantly; tap the shift key to give yourself short bursts.

So? Grab/throw, run to next guy, rinse & repeat. After seeing you
throw one guy in the air, about half the others will turn & run. Not to
mention their aim isn't THAT good (after you sprint a few yard, they
typically need a few seconds before they can hit you well, and by that
time you've moved on).

Granted, it's not like I'm invincible or anything; I tend to die four or
five times for every major fight I'm in before I get past it.

So I finally got time to finish it this weekend... and I can't :(

I'm on the aircraft carrier, and facing off against the big walking
thing that I saw in the valley.

I have a dual core CPU, 3 gigs of RAM, and a 48xx series video card.
I've set all the graphical options to "Low". I'm playing in a
full-screen 800x600 resolution.

And I get MAYbe 5-10 fps. Plus, every 10-15 seconds the game will
completely freeze for 3-5 seconds.

I understand futureproofing your game (they never expected anyone to run
it at its highest settings when it came out), but the quality levels
SHOULD provide consistent experiences across the game. How the game
plays on the "Low" settings, for instance, should be how it *always*
plays on the "Low" setting. Not 90+ fps in one part of the game, and
the situation I described above in another (*especially* when you're so
close to the end... it's not like I can just stop playing now, I need
the emotional release that you get when you finish it!)

Jesus. o_O

Heh. And to think people were telling me I should buy ATI rather than
nVidia...

To be fair, I think my vid card is damaged. I bought it used on eBay,
and I've had several problems with it (it crashes often, there's
ghosting in the image, etc).

I think I'm only buying new cards after this one... the savings aren't
worth the headache...

Anyway, I think there was also a memory leak in Crysis, because my
pagefile got to be so huge (7 gigs, in fact). Restarting the program
made it run great again for a few minutes, then back to what it was.

I've just downloaded patch 1.2, and hopefully that'll fix things.

Erm, yes.

Oh, OK. I had that from the beginning. ;-)

Oh, *sure*. ;-)

Well, I traded the abysmally poor performance & crashing for mildly poor
performance & graphical glitches. At least I was able to finish it :)

Although, after that ending, I think I need to play Warhead next. It's
about Psycho, isn't it? If so, I'd expect them to do a third one about
Prophet.

By the way, I loved Strickland's quote: "I'm a Marine, son! I'll
f***ing walk on water if I have to!"

:)

Heh. Yeah, kinda anticlimatic ending.

On a related note... Psycho sounds *just like* my mate Marcus. Heh, weird!
