And I just wasn't paying close enough attention. Some things even the
best spellcheck don't catch, so sew me... ;)

Way, WAY off topic... And I'm showing my age by saying this reminds me
of the classic Jack Benny, Mel Blanc routine with Mel as a Mexican. It
went something like this...

Jack: What's your name?
Mel: Sy.
Jack: Sy?
Mel: Si.
Jack: Do you have a sister?
Mel: Si.
Jack: What's her name?
Mel: Sue.
Jack: Sue?
Mel: Si.
Jack: What does she do?
Mel: Sew.
Jack: Sew?
Mel: Si.
... And on and on like that. If you can manage to find a recording of
it, it's hilarious. Classic Jack Benny.

I tried this comparison once some time ago on a 1.67MHz Athalon, 1GB RAM
system running Win2K, but I don't remember what Linux distro I was using
at that time, probably RedHat 9. I rendered an image under both OS's
which took about 30 minutes. The Windows render was about 3 seconds
faster (which surprised me, I expected Linux to be the faster). This
obviously is not a very definitive test, but it suggests to me that the
OS doesn't make much difference.

all the replies I have recieved put together gives me a really accurate idea
on how to proceed. Although I cant attach some of the scenes due to size
one example of a very complex example scene which took 4 hours to complete
may be found at http://www.oyonale.com/ressources/english/sources15.htm

By the way, I think given the example of how dual core really works the name
duel core is the proper spelling, as one core attempts to duel the other
for getting some of the action. LOL

AMD 64 FX 53 is quite pricy compared to what I have and is now on the
christmas list with an XP OS.

Thank you all for great information provided

Why? I can't think of anything which would make Linux faster than
Windows (or the other way around, for that matter) when running POV-Ray.

One thing which *could* affect the speed is how well the OS performs
task switching, but that's usually such a light operation that it doesn't
really matter all that much.

With POV-Ray 3.7 there could, at least in theory, be a bigger difference
between operating systems, but not likely either (unless there are several
physical processors on the system, especially if there are a lot of them).
