Hi all around,
I have massive problems with my actual machine yielding blue screens just for
random. Sometimes it workes 5 hours, sometimes only five minutes. I exchanged
the main memory but with no effort. So I decided to buy a new machine but this
was now delivered with Windows 8 unfortunatelly. As all I understood so far one
has to register an account at microsoft only to switch from a right-handed mouse
to a left-handed mouse (I'm left handed of course). I cannot accept that. It's a
bit like "Big Brother is watching You". But what should I use instead? Poser
isn't possible under every Linux installation. I'm a little bit disappointed by
Suse the last years, so my favourites are Ubuntu or Fedora: what will you
suggest?

Best regards,
michael

I'd suggest openSUSE 12.3 - many people who had been running something
else have tried it and liked it.

But I'm biased, as a member of the openSUSE forums staff. ;)

Looking at both Codeweavers and WineHQ, poser should run just fine under
WINE or Crossover.

Thank you Jim,
so I will give Suse another try. In fact from Version 4 to Version 11.3 I ever
had a Suse at my disk but I ever missed drivers for actual printers, screens or
WLAN devices. Since my new machine is not really new but at least available
since two years (Dell XPS, I have nearly the same one at my office since two
years) I hope that Suse will work. But since Windows 8 is nearly unusable
without being watched by Microsoft it's better to give Suse or another Linux
Version a try.

Best regards,
Michael

Glad to help out - if you have issues, a post in the forums at
forums.opensuse.org is usually a good way to get the issue sorted out. :)

If the hardware you're using requires binary firmware to run, there is an
extra step needed to get it working (because it's SUSE/openSUSE policy to
only include free software and not binary blobs - an untainted kernel is
a goal of the project), but that's usually very quick to sort out.

There's a very good sticky post in the wlan forum as well to help with
wlan issues - and one of the kernel wlan developers helps out in the
forum as well. :)

Can't you install the same OS that was on your old machine on the new
one? Then delete it off the old one (or maybe just not using it is
enough to satisfy the license terms?).

No, Windows as to Version 7 needs to be activated, which means that your
MAC-adress and other system specific numbers have to be registrated. Some
changes were allowed (a new hard drive e.g.), but not a new machine. Now one has
to make an account at Microsoft to use Windows 8. That means one has to give an
email-address. This is a new qualitiy IMO. BTW I was not able to install Suse
12.3 at my machine (I yielded only a black screen with vertical white lines and
had a lot of problems to get rid of it) and I'm really happy to have Windows
back just to can use the machine...

Best regards,
Michael

There are some tricks that might help get you past this point, nomodeset
is one that often helps.

Thank you for the hint. I will give it a try within next days. I must apologize
since it seems that I suffered from a severe brain damage overlooking a simple
button within Windows 8 for two evenings! Now the machine is rendering...

But I will give Suse another try since I like the one or other application
better. But this has to wait until the actual Tina-Chep-round is finished.

Best regards,
Michael

Can't comment on Poser but Daz Studio Pro runs pretty well on Wine in
Suse 12.3. A couple of issues with the preview but that might be an
OpenGL issue.
