Are you sure about that? You might need to activate the OS via phone,
but other than that it /should/ work ok.

(Then again, maybe it's a thing they only allow in the EU, or maybe even
just Germany; there have been successful lawsuits here, specifically
against Microsoft, that software vendors must allow their products to be
re-sold even by end users - even if the software is sold as a
pre-installed OEM version. Of course this requires re-activation on a
completely new piece of hardware.)

I guess that the EU will file a lawsuit against that once again, though
we'll have to see whether it'll be successful this time.

Thanks for the hint I will look into that. As far as I understood it, Wine is
capable to handle win32 applications and not 64 bit applications. But I may be
wrong with that. So I cannot expect to have my Poser running since it is a very
new and 64 bit Version.

Best regards,
Michael

Read up on Win8 before buying my new computer, so if a computer for sale came
with Win8, it was /immediately/ off my list. Win8 even makes it difficult to
install Linux; to do the install you have to disable some security feature, and
disabling /any/ security feature on /any/ Micro$hit product sounds like running
naked through thorn bushes.

How can Win8 make it difficult to install linux, given that it's not running
at all when you install the latter?

Or do you mean that after you have installed linux and try to boot to win8,
it will start complaining?

IMHO, it's a shortcut: some new motherboard came now with UEFI which
aims (and succeed) at forbidding installation of non-authorized OS. (yet
another shortcut, it's from UEFI 2.3.1)

Designed for Win8 --> UEFI might be active --> do not buy.

The interesting fact about PC market: the sell are now falling... and
some put the blame on Win8.

(the secure mode of UEFI is by default, and might, up to the model, be
under control of the user or not)

I cannot fathom what possible gain could there be for the motherboard
manufacturer to do that.

"Hey, I need a new motherboard for my linux machine, and was looking at
yours."
"Sorry, our motherboard doesn't allow you to install linux."
"Well, then I'll buy a motherboard from someone else."

Step 2: ???
Step 3: Make profit?

I don't get it.

Certification for Windows 8: ARM system *must not* allow user control of
secure mode, it must be enforced.
Other CPU are at the choice of motherboard maker to get the
Certification for Windows 8, but secure mode must be implemented (it can
or not be disabled... but it cost the work of making an option to allow
such disabling, a cheap maker would not provide that option: cost is
everywhere).

Also note that rom update might remove that choice later, and that the
list of keys might be updated to repudiate previously valid key.

The linux market is silence part, nobody make step 1 statement.
Moreover, Ubuntu & RedHat purchased a key...so far... but try installing
openbsd/netbsd/... and you're doomed.

It totaly, and safely, remove the Windows Activation Technology and make
