Rune or Slime might have been involved in the Gnip Gnop as James Thurber
called it

This sounds even better. My NEW new plan is to post a generation zero
"ping" image on Sunday 03/25/07 if nobody else posts one prior to 12:00 GMT
on that date.

Roughly half way between Harvard and M.I.T. lies a quaint little district
known as "The Village." There, in a local grocery store, a cashier noticed
that a professorial type who was wearing a tweed coat with corduroy patches
on the elbows, sporting a neatly trimmed bead and smoking a pipe was
blithely pushing a cart filled to the brim with copious items up to her
resister - which was clearly labeled with a sign reading "10 Items or
Less". Hands on hips, she stared at him and asked curtly, "OK... which is
it?"

"Beg pardon?" he responded.

"Which is it," she clarified, "M.I.T. and can't read or Harvard and can't
count?"

I don't think it needs to be that complicated. I think you should just
reply to any message in the thread, and include your own new image and
modified source.

I've already started this in the p.b.i group.

How about a circle of players. Everyone does their own rev 0. Everyone signs
up at first so as to be numbered. After finishing rev 0, you pick up from
the person in the circular buffer ahead of you. ( Caveate: not everyone
uses all of the parts of POV- the code needs to be expertly documented for
understanding by all)

Great Idea!

That is also fun and in fact I already participated. However, because
you don't know if another person is working on a change right now, each
player will only make a rather simple change which doesn't involve a
serious effort of more than a few minutes. So, it is a different
kind of game ;)

I don't really care if people are working on changes at the same time; I
think it would be fun to see how the tree diverges from the original,
and how different the resulting images could be :)

I've just started a sort of improvised ping-pong with another user, but
we've added a twist. Each of us generated a pov scene. From that scene we
generated 5 child scenes using code swap-over akin to genetic programming
and then we've set about trying to make the resultant code useable with as
little addition to the code as possible. The next round should produce
some interesting scenes.

From my point of view as a newbie to Povray, I have found it instructional
and at the same time extremely interesting. It has given me a focus in
which to improve my handcoding techniques (although modellers are allowed,
none have been used).

Why do you want to promote POV anyway? Do you feel the community is too
small? Do you think the people who are using POV already don't take it to
it's limits yet? What do you think is the reason that people spend
thousands of bucks for programs like Max, Maya or Lightwave although there
is POV? For free? Do you think the reason is that they simply don't *know*
it yet?

[imho]
No, the reason is that although POV is surely an admirable piece of software
it's still far far away from being what i would call a "professional
application". It's a kick-ass renderer but that's it. (Please don't beat me
up anyone :))
So if you want to bring POVRay to a broader audience the only meaningful way
would be to improve it's features (mainly speed) as well as adding new ones.

That being said i still don't see what this contest should be about.
Personally i want to hit *my own* limits rather than those of my app. And
this is the reason why i'm using all the programs i can get my hands on.

I think before continuing with this discussion we should all clarify if
we're talking about *visual* art or *programming* art here.

hmm, the ping-pong idea sounds nice at first, until it stops a few
interations ahead like this:

round 0: RSOCP (10 secs render)
round 1: 100 RSOCP + radiosity (2 min render)
round 2: 100 RSOCP with fresnel and IOR + some hundred boxes around to
provide some interesting reflections + radiosity (12 hours render)
....

you get the point...
