Hi

In the entry "The Wet Bird" in the hall of fame
(http://hof.povray.org/mouille.html), it is written "March-April 2001
IRTC Winner". The correct date is March-April 2000 (see
http://www.irtc.org/stills/2000-04-30.html)

Anyway, it is one of the best pictures I have ever seen, be it raytraced
or not.

Greetings
Urs

I suppose you didn't mean it, but I seem to remember there was a
strong discussion back then, because some people actually thought that
Giles cheated and submitted a photo... :) At the time I thought it was a
sign of how good he was with POV-Ray.

Yes, it is raytraced for sure!!! ;-)

There are too much convincing hints on his website
(http://www.oyonale.com/image.php?code=464&mode=info&section=2000&lang=en). I
can even remember a former version, where Gilles posted the way he managed the
fog between the near and distant buildings...

And of course the date should be corrected to 2000 (by the way, who is
responsible for that?)

Norbert

Can anyone remember or failing that find the flaw in the image that
shows that it is CG?

Perhaps you think of the "wet bird", which indeed is an image_map
(http://www.oyonale.com/image.php?code=473&lang=en&mode=info).

Looking closely there are so many small hints on the date (of the software with
which) the picture was created that there are no doubts on the way it was made.
point....

There are a lot of things that scream "it's CG!!". Of course first
impression is that of a photo, but when you start analyzing, many
details of RL are missing... plenty of them. On this and in almost every
CG image, save some geniuses work.

For example, where is the smoke/vapor from the cars exhausts??

At he time, I couldn't understand how some people really believed it
was a photo... I guess some people can't "see" past he first impression.

Nowadays I can understand someone takes a Mental Ray render for a
photo... I myself had to watch a whole episode of "The Amazing World of
Gumball" to be sure it was CG before checking on the web.

Wow - that one I didn't noticed before...

Are the reflections right for the (much to many) backlights of all the cars?
Where is rust or stains on cars, traffic lights an so on...
Look on the strange light behavior on the crysler building spire in
"http://www.oyonale.com/image.php?code=465&mode=info&section=2000&lang=en" or
the lack of rain in the atmosphere...

With a look at the poor hardware conditions ("final render took about 21 hours
on a Pentium II 350 Mhz") I get sentimental...

It "somewhat" reminds me on the black-white pictures of the moon landing I saw
back in 1969 where some people today don't believe the realitity behind.

Of course cheat is a distinct "possibility", but today a dozen of povers would
be able to replicate a similar motive in a convincing way Gilles Tran did (at
least I would place a bet on it).

What you say is true Jamie (and Norbert) but what I am thinking about
(and IIRC there was a discussion about it) is a scene fault.

In a few cases some people do the exact opposite: They take real photos
or video and post-process it to make it look like CGI. For example they
did that with the movie Ultraviolet.

See for example
