I'm trying to come up with a landscape for a scene I'm working on, but I can't
seem to come up with anything suitable. I've tried Terragen, World Machine,
and several other programs.

I have rather specific needs for my landscape, so, obviously, the best solution
would be to draw it myself, but I have no Idea how.

I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the direction of a tutorial
of some sort.

Regards,

ADB

Hi Anthony

you may give TerrainMaker a try,
it's a quite old program (DOS-Vesa) but don't be scared off that
i used it to 'draw' landscapes in the old days...

You can use a rough manually drawn height field as an input to
World Machine and then smooth it and layer some random stuff on
to make it look more real as in

http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/thread/%3C463bbad2%40news.povray.org%3E/?mtop=3

The input file was a simple low resolution b/w image, don't remember
what program I used to create it, might even have been Paint although
I'm not sure if it can write a grayscale format directly readable by
World Machine. Gimp will be fine, though.

I know what you mean. I downloaded a lot of programs to make height
feilds and never did get one I liked.
So... I made my own.
If you have windows 98 or better I have programs that make and modify
height feilds. They are at:
  http://leroywhetstone.s5.com/Win_Programs.html
The height feild maker uses contour lines as a map. It gives you great
control of the lay of the land.
I also have a program that modify height feild tgas.

Hope this helps!

I haven't used it, but Geomorph looks very interesting:
http://geomorph.sourceforge.net/

It's specifically designed for "painting" your own heightfields.

However, it seems to be pretty much Linux-only (with a FreeBSD port). As
a Linux nut, that makes me a little happier than it really should. :-)

You know you've been raytracing too long when every computer upgrade you
have made in the past three years has been to accommodate more complex
images.

Very nice, been thinking about writing something like that but I guess I
don't need to now.

Don't feel too bad about it. Linux-only here too :)
