I do hide my taskbar. I set it that way every time I've installed Windows.
In doing so I've forgotten I had a render paused after needing to get
another task done which POV-Ray can seriously slow down, esp. if on High
Render Priority. Even with all the patience necessary for raytracing,
dropping behind only 10 minutes can seem to be long a delay in getting a
rendering done.

I almost suspended my computer (Sleep) a few months ago when I had POV
minimized and hidden away and I still remember that because I'd have lost
the time it was meant to be working on a render. If only I applied more
effort to setting renders going a lot more in the first place maybe that
wouldn't have made me paranoid about forgetting one.

Anyway, the blinking Pause button and taskbar box hasn't caused me to think
it should be possible to switch it off. And I think you can get my point
here about why it would be even worse, for me at least, to mistakenly let it
pause forever or suspend the computer accidentally. Even so, I can imagine
this suggestion might be a little worthwhile if the "off" condition meant
the window and taskbar box changed to a obvious yet non-blinking color;
better yet a pattern, since color settings of Windows could potentially be
the same as the alerting one, but then a pattern probably isn't feasible.
Not sure about that.

Easy to understand though why most people probably like that POV-Ray blinks
a signal to them if they have done thing like me.

Thanks for your lengthy and polite response Ken, and I apologize again for
my overreaction...

However, Slime also agreed that it is annoying. We're 2 now :)

Actually I don't pause POV-Ray that often, but when I do, I usually prefer
to abort the render because the blink is TOO distracting. That's why I
thought about investing some of my time in giving this suggestion for a
future version.

My apologies again,

Fernando

I've never liked it either, for what it's worth, but I've learned to live
with it.

Count me in, too. Some switch would be useful.

But I guess if we keep counting, some might get pissed... :-)

On a related issue, if the system tray menu could have pause and resume
added to it that would be nice.

Actually, I did. But it was in p.o-t, so...

Povingly,

It's funny, but sometimes IE seems unable to start rendering a webpage while
pov is rendering. A simple pause-unpause usually solve the problem for the
page being...

BTW, is there any way to stop Pov from flashing so annoyingly while in pause
(in the taskbar and in the main pov windows - heck, the menus are even
grayed out, as if they were disabled, which they aren't) ?

As for the blinking problem I do not care one way or another. I have never
pause my renderings.

I do agree with Fernando in that many many times I have posted in a news
group and got flippant or other comments that sounded more like I was
wasting time making a comment. I have now just assumed that there will be
those that just pop off a reply with out actually reading and thanking about
the post.

Not everyone is that skilled with the internet nor been online or on the
newsgroup for ever or knows "proper posting manners" I got screamed at once
for where I put my reply, above or below the other persons text. I still can
not tell you where I should be typing. I have seen it here where a post in
the wrong area and the whole thread is about where the dumb poster should
have put it. Instead it should have been only a small note with no other
posts.

This happens in every newsgroup I have viewed. At least here it is less
common and most replies are polite. In a lightwave newsgroup some fellow
asked a question and the replies where an interrogation over the legality of
the posters copy of the software. I just deleted a post form POV.general
because just after I had given up searching for the answer and posted I
found the answer in the pov doc.

My word of encouragement is try to remember the vast range of knowledge of
those posting before you decide to reply with criticism.

Thanks for letting me waste your time with another unnecessary post.

:)

Me too.

Oh, sorry, that should be "yes, I have often considered that such an option
would be of benefit."

Just before I started reading this thread I was thinking how annoying the
blinking is. Add me to the list.
