It works for me. Others may have suggestions for improvement. It loads
fast (I'm on cable modem) and the layout is very intuitive, IMO. It also
looks nice!

Looks like a lot of work - a few remarks:

- it is quite unusable in Netscape 4.x although i can't find a good reason
why it has to be.
- an option for downloading the whole library would be great.
- the lot of different sample renders look quite nice but some are a bit
unnecessary (for example the 2d rotation/scaling tests). The preview
should IMO contain a sphere object so you can see at the first glance what
kind of finish and normal it has (highlights, variable reflection, ...)
The 'shapes' render contains various shapes but lacks a rough surface
(heightfield or isosurface for example).
- the water texture should get an interior with ior to look realistic.
- maybe it would be a good idea to add a 'purpose specific render' - a sky
sphere for sky textures, a plane with a sky for water textures, ...

Hi Chris,

thank you for the comments, see me answers below:

It is HTML 4.01 Strict and CSS 1.0/2.0. It was my intention to produce clean
and lean HTML code, there are enough good browsers for all platforms, so I
do not want to support the old Netscape stuff anymore. Mozilla 1.2, Netscape
6 and 7, IE 5,5.5,6.0 are fine.

Do you mean an offline version?

> - the lot of different sample renders look quite nice but some are a bit

Why is the 2d scaling and rotation not necessary? Do you know better scenes
instead?

The previews are quite small images and therefore the space might not be
enough to show this already in the preview.
I will give it a try, maybe I find a scene. It takes time to re-render the
library, so please be patient. I am going to post a demo image in the
binaries.images group.

On its way...thanks.

I plan an additional scene depending on special characteristics and
categories, such as Water, Sky, Glass. A demo is going to be posted in the
p.b.images group soon.

Thank you and stay tuned, the library will grow and change a lot,

Well, it is of course up to you how to design the page but i meant i did
not recognize any elements in your page that seem impossible to be created
in a way not messing up the page in NS 4.x. Of ocurse not everything will
be visible in NS 4.x as in newer browsers but it could be usable.

Yes.

I meant totally dripping it. The first line of 3D spheres in those
pictures already gives all information - the other two lines are quite
redundant.

I think with the size of preview it would be just fine.

What about HtmlHelp produced from time to time?

btw: at the "Contribution" section I can't find specification of the targeted
POV-Ray. Do you accept only 3.5 ? 3.1 ? MegaPOV 0.7 ? 1.0 ?

Texlib uses CSS and does not store any design information in the html code.
Because of the lack of css support and a lot of defects in Netscape 4.7, it
would be necessary to create the pages differently (more tables, more design
info in the code). It also does not implement the HTML 4.0 standard very
well.

Please accept my apologies for not supporting Netscape 4. Any reasons for
using it?

The library might be a little bit to huge for a help file. It is currenlty
40MB and grows rapidly.

Mmm...good question...the best would be to limit the support to offical
supported features or at maximum MegaPOV features. This means 3.5 and
MegaPOV 1.0. POV3.1 textures are fine too, they should work with 3.5 without
or at least after minor modifications.

We will see what kind of textures arrive. Let's postpone the decision a
little bit ;-)

You did not understand me, i didn't say "don't use any of those new
features not supported by old browsers". I just meant it should be
possible to avoid those features messing up the result in NS 4.x. It does
not have to look great, it only should be visible at all.

Because it still is the standard browser on a lot of machines (all public
terminals at university here for example).

I will investigate this problem but cannot promise a solution. It is
definitly related to CSS. If you disable CSS in the Preferences, it is
readable at least - that's one of the features I have tested --> using
Texlib without CSS.
