Greetings all...

I just wanted to share this information in case someone runs into a
similar problem. I recently upgraded my system to a K6-2 500 MHz system,
and was eager to test out pov. To my dismay, during a simple animation
rendering, the system kept crashing at around frame 19. After several
days of trying to figger out what was wrong, I realized that there was
nothing wrong with the software or the system... why would it die ALWAYS
at or around frame 19? Answer: the CPU temperature vs. time is the same
each time the animation is rendered. At frame 19, the CPU 'overheated',
and the system died. So I got a decent fan and now it works great! The
fan that was on there was so pathetic; I don't know why I even thought
of putting it on there. Duh.

I hope others find this useful when they have mysterious system
crashes...

Best Regards,

jason lechak

Recently the crappy fan on my TNT display card got too noisy so I just
removed it thinking it didn't do any good anyway. After the whole system
froze 3rd time I put in a fan from an old Pentium 233.

Maybe that's why I get some random crashes. There is a crap fan in my
'puter, but I don't know how impaired it really is, at least it seems to
blow air...
What's normal acceptable CPU temp?

Did it crash by freezing solid? This makes me wonder about my own
system.

I think that in most modern PCs there's some kind of thermometer and you
can set BIOS to show an alarm if the CPU gets too hot (and shut down the
computer if it gets dangerously hot). You can also see the temperature of
the CPU in the proper BIOS screen.
This at least in my PC.

workload. During my overclocking experiments I've observed stable system

into the danger zone. My current stats are what I consider acceptable:

Hi Jason,

My system is the same, with a K6-2 500. and during the summer, for no
apparent reason, it crashed. but on hot days, there was a persistant beeping
(similar to a car reversing signal). The shop owner said that there was a
high temperature alarm that is enabled when the CPU temp reaches 60 degrees
c, and the CPU shuts down at 70o. A better fan fixed it.
I agree with everyone, why such a crappy fan in the first place, unless
you are always going to use your computer in the refrigerator.

Alex.

If you want to do serious air-cooling of your system (with a tower or
mini-tower):
1) Remove the case
2) Purchase an 18 inch industrial exhaust fan and an 18x24 or 18x36 inch
furnace filter.
3) Place the exhaust fan on the side of your case away from the motherboard,
set to blow air outward.
4) Wrap the filter around the other sides of your box and duct-tape in place
5) Turn the fan on "high"

Note: If you regularly dust your system, the furnace filter can be
eliminated.

Mark
