  POV 3.5... Why??? (Message 1 to 7 of 7)

Why, exactly do we need a POV 3.5? I mean: we have MegaPov(Plus) already!
Let the POV-team put their time into POV4.0!
POV3.5 probably won't be better than MegaPov anyway...

Maybe I'm just tired right now...

hmmmm. i wonder; is part of the pov team working on 3.5 and another
part already trying to do the 4.0 conversion? it would seem to me that
with so many members on the team it would be 'fairly' easy for just a
few to do the 3.5 additions/changes, while the conversion to 4.0 seems
as if it would take a lot of careful planning and collaboration by many
people.

Not all Team members are coders. And of those who are, not all work on
the engine. Some take care of platform-specific stuff*, for example.

*Not that these are mutually exclusive :)

MegaPOV will always be a step ahead of the official version. However,
the need for 3.5 is basically a need to finalize and declare official
a subset of MegaPOV's features.

4.0 is a a really, really big project. Before having the engine
rewritten from scratch it would seem logical to have that engine in
the first place. See below.

Maybe not in terms of features, but it will hopefully be a step ahead
regarding stability, compatibility, extensibility, maybe even ease of
use (macros, isos...) etc.

Please note that I am not speaking for the Team (how could I?).

Just because it's that big, I think they shouldn't 'waste' time making a
3.5.
What's the point in making an engine if you have to rewrite it when you're
finished? Wouldn't it be better to make the engine as it should be?

Probably, but still I think they should start on 4.0 instead of making an
engine they will have to rewrite.

1) 3.5 is a smaller task and not as 'scary' to tackle.
2) We learn a lot about these new features as we integrate them into 3.5.
3) We get more time to debate 4.0 design issues.
4) The users get a new official version sooner.
5) The official release will be more stable than MegaPov (which is basically
a series of development releases).

More info and team comments will be available soon.
