You don't have a message search? I couldn't figure what newsreader you have,
unless it's Netscape maybe. Most any newsreader program should have a search in
it I would think.
It's a good idea because you might still have to have all of the messages on
your computer instead of only the ones set to be kept based on a predetermined
expiration.
Time and again this has been brought up, seems some people say they can always
search all the way back to the beginning, though I'm uncertain how that goes
(maybe they never allow the messages to be cleaned out), and others cannot.

If your reader supports "XPAT" search you can do a search on the headers in
a newsgroup on the newsserver, so no need to download and keep all the
headers.
A search on the contend though is a different thing.

The text on this server sums up to over two hundred megabytes (headers
included). Imagine having 50 users searching through that. Add the
overhead of compression which is used to save disk space, and you get
a somewhat clear picture of the situation.

It's not impossible, but I don't know if the current hardware would be
able to manage it adequately.

Personaly I just use the search capabilities of my browser (Netscape).
It won't allow you to search through the message body but it will
allow you to search either for the sender or the subject line. I would
like message body search capabilities but man it might take forever
to get back the results.

Ken, Agent can perform searches within the body of the article, either
within a single group or multiple groups. It doesn't take very long, at
least on my machine. This pertains to messages stored locally on my hard
drive, of course.

I know it is possible but I don't want to have to download the entire
contents of this server to my hard drive until I get a cable modem :)

Oh come on, Ken, it only took me two weeks' nights with my 33.6 :)

200 MB would fit quite easily on a CD-ROM. I'd be willing to pay $30 or
so for a complete archive of the POV news groups, perhaps throw in
c.g.r.r as well, to fill in the space?

I've also had requests for off-line copies of my POV web pages. An
archive of POV tutorials pages could fill in that extra 400 MB also :*)
