Try running POV as the shell, and see if pov will run like
that, and if it does, then you know it's not POV but windows
(well you already know that, because we're all running POV).
in the system.ini file change the following line
shell=Explorer.exe
to
REM shell=Explorer.exe
and add the line
shell=C:\PROGRA~1\pov-ra~1.1\bin\pvengine.exe
If Pov runs OK then it's something screwie with windoze.

Looks like a hardware-driver-software incopatibility problem. These
are the hardest to fix, and include things like rebuilding the whole
driver database (by deleting all devices in the hardware profile),
switching cards (modem, LAN, video, 3DFx, SCSI etc.) and ports,
banning ports, and ripping out all extra hardware and putting it in
one by one until windoze starts to die.
Did you try running it under Linux/Wine? If it still hangs, then you
might have a MB/RAM/CPU problem, maybe something as simple as CPU
cooling.
For now, try to run it in the windows safe mode.

Bill, does POV-Ray render scenes without apparent problems, such as
unexplained crashes? I ask because I had an elusive problem with
intermittent crashing of various programs but POV-Ray was almost certain to
crash (GPF) during longer renders. Took me months to figure out that one of
my RAM chips had gone south (tried re-seating them first, to no avail).

When I reinstall it, it runs fine, with absolutely no problems.

That was what I first thought and was hoping I could prove wrong. It
does run in safe mode so I figure it is a Windows re-install at the least. I
am going to try uninstalling the new CD and CDRW and reinstalling them even
though I had them for a couple of weeks before I had this problem. If that
doesn't work I will just format and reinstall everything.
I really hate to do that....

That found it! I tried to run POV as shell and it locked up. But the
only thing that ran before POV was Norton Anti-virus. Now I had Norton well
before this happened, but I did an update of the .dat file because of the
news about that virus. So I uninstalled Norton and now it runs!
Now I need a virus scanner..... maybe I should complain to Symantec...
they just sent me some propaganda in the mail yesterday.
A few tests to see if I really got it fixed are in order, but I am so
pleased that I may not have to reformat.

See: I told you so - Norton AV!!
See, Tony?
It needs some rethinking at Symantec..

I seem to remember some slight mention of NAV in some context at some
time in the past on some newsgroup by someone or another. Was that you?

Yes. Send them snail-mail also. It's totally unacceptable to have a utility
like that de-stabalize the system. You paid for a product, you should get
something that works correctly.

See? Something seemingly unrelated, just as I thought.
These things are truly annoying; to think that you almost did a Windows
reinstall because of such an obscure NAV quirk.
Glad to hear that got cleared up.
