The Link Master has done it again :)

Thanks Ken, it was very interesting reading... *I'll be planning a break in
to the chip manufacturing lab at Griffith uni next time I'm in Brisbane...
MWUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!*

Hey! Made a quick search at Altavista for a raytracing chip. The first link
displayed was "Ken Tyler's bookmarks" :)

Hi, Margus. Same here - once in a while I dust off the trusty
double-barrel shotgun and go spook hunting.

At the time I left CompuServe, several teams of volunteers had gone
through John Romero's released public domain code for the DOOMII engine and
had fixed numerous bugs and added many new features. Editors such as DeeP
have undergone concurrent development to keep up with the latest features in
the patched ee-ex-ees.

The one thing I'd always wanted to do (but never had the time for) was to
use a map editor construct a level of where I live or where I work, place a
bunch of spooks in there, and go fraggin'.

DOOM, DOOM II, Hexen, Heretic, Quake are all I have right now. Hadn't gotten those
other
sequels, just the DOOM II. My favorite is Heretic because of it's lighting effects,
although perhaps because it seemed the best thing I saw after DOOM. The polygon
creatures of Quake was okay but I can't think of any great special effects.
By the time I invest any more money into gaming there might be some truly fantastic
stuff available (or I'm just cheap).
Btw, I have a few DOOM level editors and music extraction/insertion. I made myself a
audio tape of my favorite DOOM II tunes (mid format with instrument changes) and have
played it many times in the truck or home stereo. Plus many sprites and artifacts I've
pulled out and edited upon or added new altogether.
I have yet to create any textures with POV-Ray and use them. Been a long time since
I've
done any level making, it takes up all my time as I remember. Bump mapping would be a
good thing to see along with better simulated lighting. Unless of course there already
is.

Bump mapping is implemented in some newer games, but few current accelerators
support (true) bump mapping in hardware. Lighting ain't too shabby either, with
quite realistic shadows, dynamic lighting and goraud shading with specular
highlights. Anyway, we're discussing triangle based scanline renderers in a
POV-Ray NG. That can't be right :)

I think that povray's framerate is quite ok. All those 3D games have a
definitely too high frame rate! There's no time to admire the images...

The Matrox G400 makes a (decent) attempt at it (though id says that it isn't as
useful as it might seem to be, in terms of Quake 3).

But still, if you want to see the specs on a truely psycho graphics card, check
out the G400. This thing does TV output (PAL/NTSC), *two* different displays
simultaneously (plug in two monitors, one monitor and one TV, or whatever you
want), it has direct support for digital flat panels, and resolution of up to
2048x1536 @ 32bpp. Plus its 3d hardware is so fast that the id folks thought
they'd made a mistake in their benchmarks when they first ran them on it.
