Hello,

I think it would be nice with a
POV Desktop Theme. I've got
suggestions about making graphics
for Reveal or Litestep instead
because they are more configurable.
I think that is a very good idea but
still I stick to the original idea
because not all people use these
interfaces(?). Not all people have
MS-plus! either but there are some
free programs on the net which will
let win95/98 users use desktop themes
without MS-plus!.

I've made some cursors already. They
are all made with POV-Ray except the
I-beam and the cross which I think
would be too annoying to have in POV
graphics. The 14 true color cursors
(three animated) are together 184 KB.
In which group should I post them if
anyone want them at all?

We still need wallpaper, a screensaver,
icons for recycle bin ect., and maybe
also sounds.

I think a great idea for the
screensaver would be the "You know you
have been raytracing too long..."
quotes displayed in a random order.
Does anyone want to make this? Maybe
someone with programming skills.

I have a .txt file with the quotes
changed so there are only line breaks
after each quote and so the authors
name is listed after each quote.
Just mail me if you want that file.

We also need some wallpaper. I think
the wallpaper should show the
interpretation of POV-Ray and of
course it must be made with POV-Ray
too. Anyone wants to make this?

I think it would be great if we
together could make this desktop theme
so if you wants to help with anything
just go ahead and do it and inform the
news group.

Any feedback are also appreciated

Thanks,

Windows 98 doesn't need MS plus (even though there is a version for
windows 98) there is a Themes on Bought CD versions of windows 98.
in control panel click add/remove programs then click on the windows
setup tab.... then double-click desktop themes then check desktop
themes support... then you have to have the CD(windows 98 installation
cd not MS Plus) in to add it...Now you can have MS plus themes for win
98 without buying MS plus.... BTW i can do the wallpaper..... part of
the theme and i can also make it into a theme if i can get all the parts
(sounds, wallpaper, icons, screen saver, and such)and then i can send it
to someone with a Good web page to post on the web (i have 5 MB of web
space not used but have no idea how to put one up on my ISP).

That's great!

I'll try to also make the icons for the
recycle bin (empty and full), my computer,
and network neighborhood.

Most of my XOOM.com web space is still empty, and I can HTML a bit, so
if the need becomes dire I'd be happy to put it there. Wonder about the
wallpaper files, BMP then right. What resolution(s) were you thinking
about? 640x480 and larger duplicate files. Seeing that the 640x480 has a
file size of around 1 megabyte several of these would make for a largish
file even zipped. Wonder how big a d/l is too big for most people? Also
because I would be filling in more of the xoom space sooner or later
myself.
This is of course only if there were to be multiple pictures ditto'd at
various sizes.
Answer back anything, if you will, Rune or Psych.

Most people seem to be able to handle the Pov d/l at over 5 megs :)

My Win95 with MS-plus don't have any problems with .jpg-files as
wallpaper. I don't know if others have.

I think a 640x480 image would be the best choice. That means you can
always see the whole image. At least I would prefer having a frame around
the image instead of having some of the image cut off.
We could also have multiple pictures, but wouldn't that be pretty big?
What do you think?

With MS-plus one can also have the image stretched so it fits to the
screen, but I know, not everyone have MS-plus.

BTW I can also have a copy of the final theme on my homepage.

I have to add here, a web-browser can shrink an image fairly well, one
render at 1152 is good, and then shrinking it down...

As for JPEG, it is acceptable with a low degree of compression.

Wether to only distribute as a 640x480 image is not a good option,
unless there is a single colour outline of the image. I don't enjoy
having a sharp colour contrast on my desktop, it just doesn't fit with
the rest of my layout...

Feel free to email me with a ZIP file.
Generally, the best thing to do is post it on your own server (web site or
FTP) and include a URL in your message.

I like the idea. It won't take up too much CPU power, either. Better yet,
make it a POV-Win plugin, so it can access the current scan line/percent
done information and include that!

Instead of "wallpaper", how about a Active Desktop component that would
display the current work in progress?

For full-screen wallpaper, I need 1280x1024. I never bother though because
only a tiny bit of desktop ever shows out from around my many open windows.

You could post the POV source and let people render it at whatever size they
want. Also, Windows has a way to load JPG images as desktop wallpaper, and
I think that's part of the "themes" package. So maybe it won't be much of a
problem--just include JPG of each common screen size, at 100 - 250K each.

Yeah, well, you'd think I know by now about the JPG (GIF, PNG for that
matter too) by now since that's all I ever use. I was also thinking
about several unique images for the wallpaper but if jpg no matter
anyhow. The pov source is a very good idea. That way bmp could be done
"at home".
