Help me, please!
I am absolutely exhausted of repairing damage from microsoft software.
Outlook will crash every time my modem conection drops and once every three
or four crashes it kills the file of the newsgroup I am currently reading. I
had to download povray.windows and povray.bugreports, but now that I have to
get binaries.images and binaries.animations (~90 Mb) I am giving up. I don't
want do d/l them via 33.6k modem and neither do I want to needlessly burden
the povray.org server with another 90+ Mb. So, if anyone knows of a good
newsreader, please tell me.
Here's what I am looking for:
1. Ability to import Outlook express 4.0 / 5.0 newsgroup files -- I have
about 100 Mb of those on CD
2. Ability to download messages newer than a specified date (*not* delete
messages 30 days old)
3. Have an integrated mail client -- to respond to authors
4. Features system shell open command -- to run external apps to open zips,
show pics and anims etc.
5. Show threaded messages
6. Ability to continue interrupted downloads -- so that I don't have to try
to download the same 900k anim five times due to line drops.
7. Run under Win95/98 or DOS
8. Shareware / freeware if possible
I know I am demanding much, but I am desperate. Please help.

I use Netcape here at home and find it to be a good program.
It beats the hell out of my Outlook Express.

Dunno whether or not it'll do all the things you want, but I use Agent from
Forte. They have a free version which is quite good.

Following myself here.
It appears that all of you guys proposed NetScape. I like it too. There are
two problems with using it, though. First, can it import Outlook newsgroups?
Second, it crashes a lot and yes I know it is not Netscape's fault but a
code in Windows crashes it deliberately. Happens on 3.1, 3.11, WfWF, 95, 98,
NT . Netscape is very stable on a Mac (and MacOS is generally less stable
than NT, no insults here) so it is clear there's something wrong here.
Anyway, I think it will be Netscape after all (let me just see what I've
downloaded, 4 shareware/freeware newsreaders+e-mail clients). Thank you all.

Well, yeah, I downloaded it and tried it. Looks great to me, and I think it
will be able to do that horribly hard thong -- download messages dated Sep 9
or newer. Agent has some pretty powerful filtering features and with the
right expression I might have some success.
Also, a quick < find "X-" *.* > on the DOS prompt revealed some new names --
uka_ppp, crosspoint, knews, MT-NewsWatcher, News Xpress, NoticiasUPU, TIN,
Turnpike, and WinVN. I haven't seen these on TUCOWS so I guess they are not
shareware/freeware. Any ideas about those?

tin / rtin, at least, is free software. I used to use it, and it comes
with at least one standard Linux distribution (Red Hat).

none taken, but have you tried 8.5? Rumors have it that it almost never
crashes...

NT "almost never crashes" too, if you trust Microsoft (and you shouldn't).
Almost, that is -- I currently can't send e-mail 'cause my mail server was
severely nuked by its own sysop, just to test security. No doubt that Sys
8.5 is stable at least from the point of view of hardware incompatibility.
A friend of mine has an LC630 and is running, he claims, the newest MacOS.
Is it possible to be MacOS 8.5? Sounds like Windows NoThanx on a 486
SLC/40/8Mb ram ...
BTW, I've heard good things about BeOS.

I've never had it crash, but your probably referring to server. Actually,
I've never experienced any of the awful things that people say happen to them
using the windows OS's, other than a program crash or a system freeze (in the
case of 95/98). I've never lost data unless the power went out. I'm sure no
one cares though. I sure don't.
As far as Netscape goes, I find version 4.0 to be very reliable running on
windows95. I personally can't stand IE. It just feels like there's more
room in Netscape. I see more text and graphics than 'window' and other
unhelpful junk. Favorites? I don't need no steenking favorites! Especially
not to have ones there before even using the program!
I've had problems with the 16 bit version of Netscape running on NT, but I
don't think that was ever an intended use for it.
