Hi all,

I'm trying to refine some techniques using only free software to go from an
organic model to a finished render using uv texture mapping in Megapov.

Currently I am using the excellent Hamapatch software to model, UVmapper to
create texture map templates and OBJuvPOV to create the .pov and .inc files.
Unfortunately Hamapatch's .obj export function does *not* create surface
normals for texturing and I am having to use several other steps (including
"smooth" in Crossroads) that work but still lead to less than perfect
results.

What I need is either a free converter or a dedicated utility that can take
the data in a .obj file and create/calculate normal data for *all* vertices.

Does anyone have any good suggestions in these regards???

Thanks in advance,

Jon Hoskins

Is the .obj file format available? It seems that a program could be quickly
written to do that.

Wow, I was trying to do exactly the same thing as you were (minus a bit of
your technical knowledge though, I think). Where did you find "OBJuvPOV".
From what you're said, the output is still less than perfect, but I'd like
to mess around with it a bit too. If you come up with any solutions to your
problem, please post them as I am very interested.

Still no real progress. I have found that loading the obj into Crossroads,
rotating it some and then applying the "smooth" function will create nearly
all the normals one would expect but the results are still less than perfect
(strange visable anomolies appear; holes, distortions, etc.)

This is something I am very interested in completing so if you make any
progress please email me or post here and let me know :)

You can find UVMapper at

CrossRoads at

OBJuvPOV at

and OBJ2POV at

Best of luck!

Jon

Just try 3DWin at www.stmuc.com/thbaier.
Import obj, smooth it and export as obj.
