POVRay to 3DS conversion? (Message 1 to 7 of 7)

Does anyone know if there is a way to convert .pov files to .3DS or .MAX
files?

I tried to download "Crossroads" but the link was down. Is this an
effective utility for converting POV 3.1 files, or will it only work with
older versions? Thanks!

It is generally agreed that it is not really possible.

This link works (just tested it) - http://home.europa.com/~keithr/crossroads/

Crossroads will read a "union" of triangles and convert it to whatever
Crossroads supports as far as exports BUT it will not read a mesh or
any of the other POV-Ray primitives and export them. In this sense it
is very limited and even reading a union of triangles it often gets
it wrong. It depends on how well behaved the union of triangles that
you are trying to convert is.

The simplest answer is that nothing can convert v3.1 *.pov files to anything
else.
Just isn't a complete conversion of the entire POV syntax into anything else,
far as I know.
Thomas Baier's Win3D converter http://www.stmuc.com/thbaier/products.html
and Keith Rule's Crossroads
http://home.europa.com/~keithr/Crossroads/index.html
I think you won't find anything to actually convert a pov file to another
format, but I always hope I'm wrong.
Happened to think... maybe a scene built in Moray and exported as another type
other than POV/INC qualifies as something but I don't know the program.

Or the opposite, convert a .3DS or .MAX to .pov? this way I can add radiosity,
arrange the scene add really POVRAY-oriented features that look so much better
in povray and render this thing with povray... ??

You can convert many different 3d file types into a format that
POV-Ray can use. What you get is a mesh object for your efforts.
Not all 3D file formats can be converted and to my knowlege .MAX
is one of them. This because of severe restrictions that the
creators of 3D MAX place on their proprietary file formats.

Anyway take a look at 3DWin at http://www.stmuc.com/thbaier/

of for other conversion utilities check out -

F**k! I looked at 3DWin, seems exactly what I need!
My friend is good with 3DSudio and I am with Povray, I think this can be a nice
combination!
I also do OpenGL (games, and such), this will also be very cool!

Thanks a lot!

Maybe... :-)
I will add an import for POV-scenes in POV-Studio (as first only for camera,
lights and standard-objects). I will upload a beta of this as a converter from
POV -> DXF (later 3DS, LWO, ...)

I will post again, when the first version is out.
