me to make this this image.
I'm not satisfied with the texture yet. Any suggestions ?

Thanks.
It's an isosurface.
Here is a similar image I made (without the distortion):

I used a function (built with a macro) to "distort" the isosurface.
The macro is named RotateXYZ_Function() and can be found in the
source code for the 4th image on my POV-Ray gallery page:

Real cool ! I should definitly think more about iso surfaces ...
For the texture you could try some sort of old unreflecting rusty metal.
Radiosity could also help have more visibility in the dark places.
How long does this image take to render ?

Good idea. I'm not good with textures, so I'll think a while about
how to do that.

It took about 6 hours to render on my 2GHz Athlon PC. - So it will be
a very painful process to experiment with radiosity in this scene.

Yes, I had the same thought - maybe using some blurry reflection (takes
awfully long to render) and some rusty spots.
An animated one would be cool...

Stunned me totally!
I tried in the past to do the same kind of thing, a movie and made the
sticks in deformed motion like your picture, but I used simple cylinders
and a special lens over my camera to distort the cylinders, needless to
say it was much less perfect that yours! 10 points for you! ;)
BTW, I think the texture is fine, have you thought on adding IOR or
reflection? If so, then I would suggest scaling the texture and
possibly make the texture the normal texture (though I wonder if it
affects reflection and IOR as it should).

I wish I could understand isosurfaces as you do!

I'm trying to make a rusty texture, but I'm not very successful at it.

I think so too, but currently it takes about 6 hours per frame to
render, so I think that I'll have to wait a couple of years for that
to be doable. (Maybe when I get my first 10 GHz PC)

Thank you very much !
I'm currently trying to make a rusty and a little bit reflective metal
texture. Some "normals" are already present in the isosurface itself
(It is displaced by the same pattern that controls the pigment.), so
maybe I should increase the displacement instead of adding normals to
the texture (?)
