This is an illustration from the 56th IPCC Summary Report, published in
2268. After climate change drove humanity to an artificial structure
around the Earth, the Panel continued to monitor the planet and to
report on its changes.
The President of the United States In Exile (POTUSIE) has been reported
to comment that "again, a useless piece of paper had been produced by a
group which, unrelentingly, pursued its own agenda."
A few comments about the image:
- Bald Eagle is thanked for little code that renders "an alternative
spiral". It is the basis for the rocky outcrop height_field.
- One million trees (2 types) were planted to fight rising CO2 levels.
- Fifty thousand boulders (also 2 types) were thrown to earth. Nice to
mention that their sizes gradually decrease with distance from the camera.
- The space structure was built in Silo2.

this is exquisite.
critiques first. there is a boulder below and left of center perched on its
end. it looks peculiar. there is another, closer, below and right of center.
the boulder at the base of the near tree lower right has a bright band at the
bottom that looks like sunlight coming thru the rock; surely an honest depiction
of the geometry but if it were me i would cheat and get rid of it somehow.
i do not see a million trees possible in this scene. perhaps they are
de-scaled to be the moss on the ground? or is the one-million purely part of
the scifi dialog?
the boulder at the lower left has a shadow at the top that i mistake for the
silhouette of a bird. which reminds me there is no animal life in the picture.
how would it affect the purpose of the picture if there were? what if there
were a mad-max figure in the scene? a bit much?
the craggy outcrop in the distant center is something i drool for. wonderful.
the thing that rivets is the space structure. mesmerizing. i can not make it
out however, very mysterious. it seems to be three structures helixed around
themselves; but their cross-sections are very unclear.
somewhat off-topic, but how do the people in the space structure live as far as
gravity/acceleration?
thank you for this image, a living presence burned in my brain.

I agree with green's critique plus a floating rock in front of the tree
in the foreground.
Niggles aside it is impressive. The space structure brings to mind, the
Mobius offspring of a twist drill, writ large.
The composition is good.

Very nice.
My nit picks :
To the right, just in front of the tree, there is a boulder that float
slightly over the ground.
Next, there are two boulders standing up in an impossible position :
Centre of gravity is not over the area of contact with the ground.

LOL!
The image is beautiful-- lots of nice detail and realism. Kudos!
For the rocks, I would suggest burying them into the ground a little bit.
Assuming they have been there for ages(?), the natural wind erosion of the
ground around them would have filled in some dirt and sand. Or maybe they are
'fresh', from some kind of recent Earth-shattering explosion?
Nice textures for the rocks, btw.

Thanks - glad to have provided something useful.
I would never have recognized it :D
What does the heightfield image look like? Did you make "an alternative
spiral" and then blur it to get the tapering into the plain?
> - One million trees (2 types) were planted to fight rising CO2 levels.
<Dr. Evil> "One MILLION trees...." </Dr. Evil>
I think that phytoplankton, prairie grasses, and cannabis sativa (that other
grass), would make a far bigger dent, much faster.

....Why? From where?
Aside from that, and others comments, I'll join in with agreeing that your rock
texture is indeed very nice.
> - The space structure was built in Silo2.
Nice.
Though very different - it kinda reminds me of the "Kluchikov" isosurface.
I think I'd like to see some additional renders of that.

Nice, sombre, atmosphere, Thomas.
When I saw the picture my first thought was, what a funny clouds.
Then I realized they must be the "artificial structure around the Earth".
Ton.

I was almost going to say: I did that on purpose ;-)
Especially the boulder hovering over the ground is a glitch in the code.
It has been hammered down into the ground already. The others will be
treated likewise as soon as I have tracked down their location.

A bit of overkill I am afraid, but there are - literally - one million
trees in the visible part of this scene. Most are invisible because the
horizon is far away ;-)
You may have worries about the render time but no. It is true that most
time goes into the plotting of the locations, but those are written away
into a separate file, and used afterwards for the planting proper.
Reading those locations is fast.

In the upcoming version, there will be some animal life (how much is
still a matter of debate with myself) but there is no place for a Mad Max.

Correct. Three - structures with an irregular, asymmetric, section - are
helixed.

I have no idea. My contact person there did not tell me. :-)

Thank you indeed Stephen. The rocks need a bit of additional attention
but nothing to worry about. I was going to write that lighter-than-air
boulders were the consequence of climate change, but I am afraid nobody
would swallow that. ;-)
