Hi(gh)!

Surely I'm not the only one who dreams of creating a virtual
Afghanistan... with sufficient manpower behind, others are already far
more advanced: https://www.metavr.com/technology/afghan_village.html

This is about the level of realism I would like to achieve - of course
in a pre-war (1973 mode) and an alternate history (Afghatopia mode)
setting! And not necessarily in POV-Ray alone - for real-time
interactivity, I will have to switch to X3D or even basic OpenGL
programming...

See you in Khyberspace!

I must say that you don't think small. :-)

We all have dreams.

You will note that the buildings are mostly simple cubes with a
realistic image_map applied. This is a simple way to get fast and
realistic-looking environments. For the foreground you could use more
sophisticated models of course.

And, unless I find same-minded people for collaboration, I'll have to
live a much longer lifespan than ordinarily found in humans - at least a
high 3-digit, if not a 4-digit one! I doubt that Transhumanist
technologies will arrive in time for me - I'm already 46 and, due to
massive overweight, at least currently not a candidate for becoming a
centenarian...

So, what about Khyberspace?

See you there... at least at KBL!

Maybe PovRay is not the correct tool for that. A game engine might be
better. With the uv maps rendered in PovRay, of course. :-)

Yes, what about Khyberspace, indeed!
Are you still going on with it?

Yes, I do... at the very moment, I'm sitting at the Kabul 1:100,000
heightfield (equalling about 12.5 metres from pixel to pixel) and pixel
my way along the mountain chain bordering the city in the southeast...

Automatic contour line interpolation is something too difficult for me,
at least for the time being (I tried to write a C++ program to do this
last autumn, but the results were far from satisfying), and even with
the best interpolation program, manual post-processing would be
necessary - which also means programming a special editor for 16-bit
POV-Ray heightfields!

As neither extreme longevity (1000 years or longer) nor collaborators in
the POV-Ray (and, later on, X3D/OpenGL) community are in sight, I
probably have to instill the love of Afghanistan and programming in my
little nephew, who just turned 3 years old in February... (and who is
really fond of his weird fat long-haired bearded uncle...)!

See you in Khyberspace!

I experimented with the UNITY game engine. For some uses, it can be
downloaded (legally) free of cost.

Wow - that's kind of disturbing.
I guess if you had the backing of the Military-Industrial Complex, you could
just laser-scan all of Afghanistan and render it as a mesh, then overlay it with
a UV-map stitched together from satellite imagery...

Keep working on your stuff. You'll make some progress.
Keep in mind that taking breaks can seemingly paradoxically make you more
productive. Do something to get the blood moving, clear the mind, and refresh
the body.

I'm a little behind on things, but if it's still helpful, there are sources for
geotiffs if they can be easily used or converted to heightfields.
