Hey, instead of trying to hunt down the "one true logo" that means all 
things to all people, why don't we just, well, do something like this...

I like the second one... I predominate. :)  But seriously, I don't think
this will do for a logo. You might use the robots in HE Day's image as a
sort of mascot, but I don't see anything else coming from this.

The way my brain was thinking at the time was "Why not let the symbol of 
the art be the art itself?"

(BTW: I collated 4 into the second image just to show how they looked 
side-by-side.  I included it so as to help divorce the content from the 
format, and minimise any bias which would naturally occur if I only 
selected a single trace.  I did not intend to suggest that a series 
actually be used for anything on its own.)

I figure that rather than one fixed logo, the PoV-Ray community could, 
perhaps annually, vote on the dozen best static traces produced in the 
preceeding year.  Those 12 traces get turned into a series of stamps, 
and then feature prominently on websites (stored on a single server, 
rotated monthly by cron, and linked to by everyone else).

Because the art is continually being refined, the stamps would move with 
the times.  That way, we wouldn't have to go through this torturous 
"let's think up a new logo 'cos the old one looks crusty" routine every 
few years.

The only thing that is consistent is the 'container' for the trace.  I 
used a stamp because, well, it just plopped into mind at the time.  
There is no reason it couldn't be a picture frame, a plaque, or even a 
window frame.  The simpler and more unobtrusive it is, the better.  Now 
that I reflect on the choice, stamps get sent all around the world, so 
would our traces.  Stamps celebrate or recognise the culture from which 
they originate, so would our traces.  For those that like reading 
meaning into things, there a lot there to be read...

Your idea of selecting some best images of the year is probably very nice.
Only, it has nothing to do with a logo. You can't just take a word (such as
the word "logo") and decide for yourself what the word means. There may not
be very clear definitions of what a logo is, but I'm absolutely sure that
your idea falls outside any meaningful interpretation of the word. At least,
that's how I see it, and it seems that how many other people see it too.

It's like if Nike said: Why not let the symbol of shoes be the shoes
themselves? Rather than making a fixed logo, we find each year some pictures
of some of our shoes and use that as our logo.

That would be silly of course. I think you should look at what other
companies do. There just might be a reason that they do it that way...

But besides that, I wouldn't mind having selected some "best images of the
year". :-)

Words change, meanings of words change. Maybe it is time we redifine the
word logo to mean what we want it to. Let's bring the word logo into a
21st century context which includes computer generated 3D symbolisms and
complex abstractions. Let's be rebels !

    I agree that words change, but the function we want is still here. We
want something by which POV-Ray can be recognized. A changing series of
pictures will not do that very well.

    However... an object which stays the same while displaying a changing
series of pictures might do.

I like this idea. It says PoVRay in the text part of it. No mistaking 
there. And it shows off some of the best work of the best of us. And
it is not static. Just as we are not static. It would ever become like
an award to have one of our works chosen to be in the official POVStamp
collection. People could collect them, use them wallpaper, put them on
their luggage, book covers, or car windows. As soon as you put that
stamp
look to it, it becomes appropriate to stick anywhere. And it says POV.

speaking of nike, maybe a pov logo should be analogous to the nike
"swoosh"???????  with the words 'pov ray' only making occasional
appearances with it?????  comments?
