Gain in quality and better playability perhaps, not exactly sure. The file
sizes of Mpeg-2 always seem quite large by comparison to Mpeg-1 from what
I've seen. Don't know if that is settings related or not. Oh, and Mpeg-2
can have sound added I believe is the main difference.
The thing to look at is the FAQ:
http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/frame/research/mpeg/mpeg2faq.html

Mpeg-1 can have sound too :)

A lot I know! Thanks, didn't think so at all before. Just read some of the
Mpeg FAQ because I was wrong, explains it pretty well there (but not why I'm
wrong so much).

This is a problem i have. Some people get crappy access to my place.
Usually if you have poor routing to povray.org, my site will be painful.
(povray.org sits on T3s in Hartford, CT and buckosoft.com is 2 hops behind that)
Plus, i am on a 64Kb line behind that, which is fine for lite duty, like J. Gimbert
got 7.5KB/s from me which is my top end.
You probably timed your download to coincide with the 178 lurkers here who downloaded
that program in the first 48 hours it was up. (430 downloads in 2 weeks).

Too bad nobody has replied with a success story for using it.

I thought so.

You can probably blame me for that one :)

I posted a link to your site on the povray.org links page within 19 min.
of your announcement.

Yeah, i noticed that. :) I was briefly confused because the referrers are for the
povray
main page; (what!? a link from www.povray.org??) But i decided that is because
povray.org
is framed (which shows a browser bug in the referrer). But most of the first 2 days
refers
were of the news:// variety.

Actually, i purposely didn't link to it from my _own_ site to try to get a little data
on
the newsgroups lurks; but you blew that metric for me. ;) After i noticed your link,
i
had to throw a little text on the page asking someone to share if they figure it out.

Ken:

Just for the sake of those (like me) whose NG server seems to have
dropped some messages, can you tell me what site you're talking
about? I'd like to check out another MPEG encoder, one that can
handle PPMs, as I'm not happy with the quality I'm getting from the
Berkeley package, but I never saw a message with the site URL.

Thanks.

You NG server has nothing to do with it. You most likely have an expiration
time set for news group articles in your news reader program. The groups on
this particular server are not set to expire any message and all that have
ever been posted here are available for review.

This is Dick's original post:

I have png support added to mpeg2encode, and have it recompiled as a Win32 console
program. You can fetch it from here if you'd like:

http://www.buckosoft.com/gallery/tools/mpeg2/

I still haven't got a decent mpeg2 out of it yet, either underruns or overruns;
so many parameters to tweak, so little time.

You need to set your server properties for news.povray.org in Netscape.

I like the Berkeley encoder. I think it produces pretty good mpegs,
and they are much much smaller than the likes of cmpeg. Bummer that
it doesn't produce mpeg-2s.

Here's the settings i used on one run:

PATTERN IBBPBBPBBPBBPBB
OUTPUT e:\povwin3\Buckosoft\mpegs\tteoac.mpg
INPUT_DIR f:\povwin3\BuckoSoft\tteoac
INPUT
tteo*.ppm [0001-1752]
END_INPUT
BASE_FILE_FORMAT PPM
INPUT_CONVERT *
FORCE_ENCODE_LAST_FRAME
GOP_SIZE 30
SLICES_PER_FRAME 1
PIXEL HALF
RANGE 10
#PSEARCH_ALG LOGARITHMIC
#PSEARCH_ALG SUBSAMPLE
PSEARCH_ALG TWOLEVEL
#PSEARCH_ALG EXHAUSTIVE
BSEARCH_ALG CROSS2
#BSEARCH_ALG EXHAUSTIVE
IQSCALE 8
PQSCALE 10
BQSCALE 25
REFERENCE_FRAME DECODED

I tried the EXHAUSTIVE algorithm which increased the encoding time from about
6 hours to a couple of months without any real improvement in quality or size.

And all I ever managed to get was a garbled animation; seems no matter what
I tried (what I could understand or not) refused to play correctly. Always
looked like a TV set with the vertical and horizontal askew.
