"Solid" meshes are unnecessary for proper operation of interior. What's
necessary is a topologically closed object with a consistent interior. You
can even give an interior to a bicubic patch mesh and get it to work.

But you can't give an interior to a triangle, because it doesn't have an
interior. Well, you can, but as Chris said, it won't do what you want.
