When I start the povray help file, it starts in a window rather than maximised -
anyone know how to change this behaviour so that it starts maximised?

Well, Alt+Space then X key does maximize. He didn't mean C key. Checking
here, I noticed I can get a pseudo full screen of the Scene Help that will
remain that way even though I close POV and rerun it. Problem is, it isn't
really maximized and only a very large window instead.
I usually use it in a smaller window but I know I must have maximized it
before, so I'm not sure if it can remain that way indefinitely (large, but
not maxed). Apparently what it is doing is keeping the window size large yet
unmaxed on successive starts. This is Windows XP Home here.

Yes, that's basically the behaviour I get (large but not maximised). Oh well.

I usually double-click on the title bar...

I think that's a known bug (feature?) of MS HTML Help. All CHM files I
have, including MSDN, open at the size and position I gave, but don't
memorize the maximized state. A well known problem (storing the window
state and position), resolved since a long time, but forgotten by some MS
programmers...
Now, you can associate a shortcut key with "Open maximized" property.

So I should merge this post with my never-mentioned feature request - the
ability to add/remove/modify icons on the pov toolbar?

Do the same in Tools menu calling command
start /max hh "c:\Program Files\POV-Ray for Windows v3.5\help\povray35.chm"

Bit of a kludge, but watchcat (GPLed) should be able to do this.
http://www.geocities.com/vassili_bourdo/software/wcat/download.html
Download the beta - it's much better & still stable
I also use it to hide any consoles the Win32 GIMP pops up.
Hope this helps,
Pabs

Oops it can't, but I think http://www.windowspowerpro.com/ can
