Just in time to expire in a few days, but I should have an update available
concurrent with other distros.

This is a fairly traditional povlinux.tgz, but with HTML docs in the
package. The binary itself (just one, supports both X and SVGAlib,
uses whichever makes most sense) is statically linked so as to avoid
dependency issues (since you can't currently build against your own
installed libraries). Built on Red Hat 7.2, in case it matters.

Future versions will involve a whole stack of RPM's and (at some
point) .deb packages, but I'm not going to bother with this one given that
it's due to expire so soon. They'll be built with an prefix of /usr, but this
one is built with a prefix of /usr/local, though, so as not to conflict with
anything you have in package management. Keep a mind to your
$PATH if you end up with multiple versions installed in different prefixes
at some point.

Download from:

ftp://ftp.povray.org/pub/povray/Official/Linux/3.5beta/povlinux.tgz

It's a gzipped tarball. Linux users (with GNU tar, one can assume) can
uncompress it with tar xvfz povlinux.tgz, then cd povray35 and run
./install as root.

There are some references to this being version 3.4.9, which is what
the later beta packages will be so as to allow for smooth upgrade to
3.5 once the beta period is over.

Please report any problems to the povray.beta-test group.

Thanks, I'm running it now via the latest KPOVModeler (0.1)
Seems to be working fine.

What did you do to get this to compile? I grabbed the source tar-ball
(not the CVS stuff), and totally failed to get it compiled.

From what I recall, it was totally failing to use the correct Qt libraries
- it was wanting to use libqt instead of libqt-gl, and nothing I could
do would convince it otherwise... :-( (And yes, I tried various options
to ./configure, even editting the ./configure script and all the
Makefiles failed to get it going. Even typing in the final link command
(all 8 to 10 lines of it!) failed.)

Can you spare any pointers or clues?

Steve

No, I don't know what system you are using so I haven't a clue what you
need to do. It compiled fine on Mandrake 8.1 but you need to set $KDEDIR to
/usr for the install to work (I hand install my compile!)

I suggest you look at the mailing list for KPOVModeler.

Darn, sorry.

Debian Linux 2.3/3.0 (unstable / testing), kernel 2.4.12, KDE
2.2.<something>, gcc 2.95 (2.96? - not 3.0 anyway), latest version of Qt
libraries.

I shall take note of the $KDEDIR value, but from what I could see, the
configure script worked it all out for me.

I'll do that. Thanks for the pointer.

And since I tried to compile it, they've released a new version. I
shall try my hand with that one and see what happens.

OH I forgot to mention that, the new version came out a couple of days ago!
:o)
As for Debian, never used it, but the guys on the mailing list know their
stuff and can give you some pointers.

My first tests showed it to be slower than 3.1g, but I havn't tested it
properly yet. It complains a bit about skyvase too, it does render, but
from the messages I get I think it can only be fixed by updating my pov
.inc files.
