I've got Sun Ultra Enterprse 450 with Solaris for one month test. I have to test
my company software on this machine. I want install on it POV-Ray and MegaPOV
and need/configure enviroment for writing scripts. Can anybody point me/help me
anything ? I have no time to play with it just for fun and check different
solutions. Remember that I'm complatly new in this environment.

What have you done so far?

Have you downloaded the tarballs for POV and MegaPOV?

When you say "scripts", do you mean POV files?

Does your current instalation of the OS contain X and
a window manager (Sun probably do one of their own, I'm
not sure, never seen it).

There are others who can probably help you more than I can
as I've never used a Sun system, but if you get really stuck
and can't get help anywhere else feel free to mail me or post
here.

I use Sun Solaris as my primary workstation so I can help you with this.
First you will need to get a recent copy of Pov-Ray and the binaries on the
Pov-Ray site are grossly out of date with no hope of that changing. God only
knows why. Just send me an email and I'll send you the compressed tarball for
Sun Solaris. The version that I'll send you is Pov-Ray 3.1g and it works just
fine with no changes made by me. The E450 that you speak of is probably a
fine machine but don't expect blazing performance. You need a multi-cpu
system for that and the E450 can have only four cpus, that's nothing to write
home to mom about.

Anyway, just send me an email and I'll give you a hand with setup and
testing. That includes the E450 system as well if you need a hand with that.

Something about none of us having a Sun machine to test them on. Anybody
has an old SparcStation they were just gonna throw out, let me know.

It seems a multi-cpu machine would be wasted on stock POV anyway, unless
you're rendering animations or splitting up the frame for stills.

I guess that someone is going to have to bite the bullet on that one sooner or
later. Geez I wish it was six months ago, before all the tech stocks took a
dive. I'd be in better position to donate. You probably need a multi-cpu
system if we have any hopes of ever seeing a multi-threaded version of
Pov-Ray. Probably an old Sun Ultra 2 with dual 250MHz or 300MHz cpus with
256Mb of RAM and dual 9Gb disks would suffice. There is no sense in looking
at Sparc Version 1 processors like SM71's and old 32-bit technology. We now
work with Sun Ultra II and Sun Ultra III Sparc version 9 + processors with
64-bit functions. You will also need a respectable graphics card with OpenGL
hardware so thats a Creator 3D Series 3 card for that. A copy of Solaris 8
would finish it off .. oh and a 20 inch Sun monitor right? Geez. Thats
thousands of dollars worth of hardware. :(

Unless there were some promise of a multi-threaded version of Pov-Ray in the
future. I gave up on that a long time ago when I was talking with Mark Gordon
back in my wealth days. The promise of multi-threaded Pov-Ray is gone as well
as most of the wealth. Let's see what happens in the near future and I'll be
the first one to donate hardware.

Since I just put it in writing it is now a matter of record.

I'm flirting with the notion of picking up a SunBlade at the current
price, but it may be a few months (maybe after SIGGRAPH).

Don't do it Mark! Those things are flowing through to people that simply
don't know any better. The SunBlade 100 is simply Sun's way of recoving their
initial R&D expenses on the SunFire processor. The SunBlade 100 does not have
an UltraSparc III processor. It has an UltraSparc IIe processor with little
or no effective cache. No one in the Sun world would consider a processor
with 256k of cache when the currently shipping UltraSparc II processors have
4Mb and 8Mb of cache. That little box is cheap for a reason. Wait a little
while. In a rapidly falling market you will see the older systems [ Sun Ultra
2 for example ] dropping in price. There is a system on eBay right now with
dual 300MHz processors and 256Mb RAM for next to nothing [ $1500.00 ] with a
Creator Card for graphics. Don't spend your hard earned money on that
SunBlade 100 junk. Get an old Ultra 2 or Ultra 60 with real processors for
about the same price and get great performance.

To be honest, I don't need processing power; I need something I can use
to build binaries. Cache is nice, but if the binaries build a bit
slower, it doesn't matter that much to me. Don't worry; I won't shame
Sun with my benchmarks. ;-)

Still, it's probably going to be a few months before it happens, so I'll
see what's on the market in a few months.

You can build binaries on Linux. You only need the Sun for making sure
they work.
