Hi.

I'm lost totally. I just finished install Linux (Red Hat) Ok. The first
thing I did was to go on the Povray site to download the Linux version
of Povray. Now in the Gnome file manager I can see the I have
Povlinux.tgz that seems to be a zipped file.

I could open the Readme.Linux file and read it but it does not say much
about how to install. It's a bit more complex than Windows version.

So here I am. Can somebody point me to the right direction in order for
me to install?

Hi Philippe

First open up an xterminal or you can use the console if you want. 
You'll find an icon for an xterm in the menu system of the GUI that 
you're using.  

Go to your home directory:

$ cd
$ ls p*.tgz

And you'll see a listing of the povlinux.tgz file, if you don't then it's
somewhere else.

Now do:

$ tar -xzvf povlinux.tgz
$ cd povray31
$ su

You'll be prompted for the root password (you weren't already logged in 
as root were you?), type in the root password and press enter, the prompt
should change from a $ to a # then type:

# ./install

And now you should be almost there, you will need your own .povrayrc file,
it talks about that in the README.linux file.

Thank you for helping.

I did install it for sure and if I run it
on the command line it does work.

But is there a user interface like in Windows
or should we always render images from the prompt?

No, for the time being there is no GUI (although there has been some
tentative talk of one being implemented in the future).

There are a number of excellent editor out there for Linux, such as Emacs,
or my favourite, Nedit (both can be configured to use POV syntax
highlighting).
GUIs also exist for controlling POV render options (input file, image size,
antialiasing etc) and launching the render.
