Facebook just suggested a "Christoph Lipka" as someone I might know.  Well yes,
I've communicated on-line with someone by that name, but I wouldn't go so far as
to say that I /know/ him.  Besides, whoever that person is who was suggested, he
doesn't have any public info on his profile.  I have no way of knowing whether
or not he is our clipka.

How would Facebook know anyway?  As far as I can tell, the only place we're
linked on the Web by both our real names is in one Object Collection document.

Then again, Facebook has also suggested U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsburg as a friend.  I'm deeply flattered, but don't know her either.

Facebook certainly knows the e-mail address of this "Christoph Lipka",
and - being the data kraken it is - might have also come across
information to link that e-mail address to the username "clipka" in
various places. It might now be testing the hypothesis that the "clipka"
it has come across earlier is the same as the "clipka" posting to these
newsgroups.

But that's just one possible vector.

As for whether that "Christoph Lipka" is indeed the "clipka" posting
here, my suggestion is to not bother. The only reason I have a facebook
account at all is to be able to search for names there.

Facebook knows a Christopher Lipka who has your e-mail address in his 
address book.  Or vice-versa.  One of the two has allowed FB to persuse 
his local address book (probably with a mobile app, where these things 
tend to happen without our knowledge)

I am not on Facebook, and never have been, but about once a year, I get 
an invitation with a "list of people you may know" that includes half my 
family, folks from here, work and other online places I frequent.

Probably not in this case. If Cousin Ricky had Christoph's e-mail in his
facebook address book he wouldn't be surprised, and if that Christoph
Lipka is "the one", I know for a fact that he doesn't maintain a
facebook address book at all.

I don't have a smart phone, so it wasn't a mobile app.  (This is likely to
change, however, as society is hell bent on making it as difficult as possible
to function without one.  I recently bought a food product for which the
preparation instructions were not on the package; you could only access them via
a QR code!)

However, I did link my Facebook account to my Yahoo! account, after which I
discovered that every frickin' article I read on Yahoo! was posted to my FB
wall!  And possibly emailed to me as well, but I don't remember, because I
filter all the crap from Facebook.  I very quickly found that setting and shut
it off.  I don't think my FB friends want to be bothered with that chaff any
more than I wish to share it.

Clipka is not in my address book.  Facebook could find his email address if they
spied on my personal email, but I would think that Yahoo! wouldn't give them
that sort of access.

Are you sure about that?

First, it might be sufficient to spy on the email /metadata/, which
lowers the bar a good deal.

Second, it would obviously suffice if /Yahoo!/ did the spying, and
shared some of the obtained knowledge with Facebook. I wouldn't bet on
Yahoo! being less of a data kraken than its competitors, and they do
have /some/ kind of collaboration going on with Facebook.
