Can I upload large images to the POV-Ray newsgroup? I created one that
is more than 25MB that I would like to upload.

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the limit is 5MB. As a practical matter, it probably needs to be
slightly less than that, to allow for any uploading 'overhead' imposed by the
newsgroup itself. (For example, uploaded video animations also have a 5MB
limit-- but a video that's over about 4MB won't go through. There's probably
less overhead for a still image, though-- my guess.)

It's the same overhead. The issue is that binary data is encoded and
stored as a horribly inefficient ASCII data mime attachment.

I would do a dropbox thing, and then post a link.

Please don't, and rather store it on some website and link there. Or try
JPEG with a high compression (low quality) setting to crank down on the
file size.

Overly large attachments make posts a pain to view in newsreaders like
Thunderbird, and presumably also the web interface.

Okay, I won't. But Thunderbird is less of a PITA than Flickr when it
comes to images larger than your monitor. In Thunderbird you just click
on the attachment link and open it with whatever program is associated
with the image type. (I use the excellent XnView.) On Flickr you have to
be aware of the download menu, then select the file you want to
download, then save the file to disk and open it manually.

I'm not talking about image resolution but image file size.

Not everyone reading the group uses Thunderbird. Even with a 150 Mbps
connection, I'd be looking sideways at a large image download.

Why not just use something like imgur.com? You don't even need to sign up for
anything, and it automatically strips header information so that you don't have
to.
