For some time I have been thinking about leaving the land of my birth
forever. I don't like what's happening to it and ... well you can guess
the rest.

It may never happen but there seems to be only one option.

Just look at the scenery

What other nation honours its dead with such passion

...and finally

where else will you find a national team that cares so much for its own
country?

Yeah, there's probably no place like the shire.

I can think of worse places.

She has a braw voice and it is a fine tune.
If you go, get used to shouting about your Scots ancestry.

You forget that I lived there back in the 90s. Yes, having Scots
ancestry gives a tiny bit of cred but what is much more important is the
'no worries' mindset - if something goes wrong, you just get stuck in
and fix it without expecting the world to rush to your rescue. Though,
in my limited experience, you will find a host of assistants queuing up
to offer help, should you need it.

Yes, I did. You've not mentioned it much.

You sound as if you liked it there.

I didn't just like it, I loved it. My office had a fabulous view of
Auckland harbour and, after work, sitting on the deck with a cold beer
in hand I could have been forgiven for thinking that I was in some
sub-tropical paradise.

If you and Regan ever get the chance, I urge you to go and have a look.
Allow at least two months though and you'll still only be scratching the
surface.

Shame you had to come back.
I've just found a stockist for coconut water. And that takes me back. :-)

BTW Say "Fish and Chips". :-)

It is a shame that you can't drag Britain to the tropics. Because as
much as things are going bad. There are a lot worse places in the world.
I know I've worked in a few.

I would love to. I would include Uluru, in the Northern Territories. We
did not go as Regan had cataracts at the time. I do have a rock from
there, called Dinkum. Dark redish brown through a light sandy shade. It
is a fair dinkum. ;-)

Up here there has been a general, continuing trend during the past 10+
years of self-hatred and inferiority complex. National pride is not only
seen as negative, but the sentiment has escalated to amazing proportions
(with many public figures and reporters claiming that national pride
literally leads to genocide.) Likewise our own culture is shunned and
badmouthed, and considered something to be ashamed of. (Endorsing the
culture of your own country is seen as basically the same as nationalism.)
The most negative aspects of the country's culture are brought forth
and exaggerated, and the positive aspects are ignored or belittled.
(As a perfect example, these people try to force into the public notion
that wife-beating is some kind of "national sport" here, even though
statistically Finland is rather average in terms of on domestic violence.)
The reverse is of course done to cultures of far-away lands: The positive
aspects are emphasized and exaggerated, and the negative aspects are
either vastly de-emphasized, or outright ignored and denied.

It's almost like these people *want* all the western countries to
cease to exist.

Out of context but I cannot help myself.
