Looking for a normal pattern to give an irregular faceted or grainy look.
I somehow expected "granite" would do, but no.  granite with a tiered
slope_map, perhaps?

What it's for: I've been making 3D versions of various simple coats of
arms, with metal and stone textures -- see one example on my webpage --
and am dissatisfied with the appearance of metal as a flat background.

There is an example scene for the quilted normal that might provide
what you need. Look in the advanced section of the scene files
directory for a .pov file called quilt1.pov. You might also try using
the crackle pattern in a normal statement.

Will crackle work for you? Yes, it's not exactly facetted, more like
pyramidal, but it's the best match you could get with simple normal
statements.

Funny you should mention that.  The Superpatch has a facet normal
that's based roughly on crackle and probably does exactly what he
needs.

You don't expect me to remember any single feature you happen to add
to the SuperPatch, do you? I can't even cope with the list of the
features let alone their functionality. :)
