Found this place through Ken Tyler's home page...great site.

Anyway, I was hoping some of you might be able to help a newbie :) I posted
this in comp.graphics.raytracing (I think that's what it's called) but I
thought I'd give it a try here too.

I'm running into an annoying problem using sPatch. Say for example I have a
rectangle made out of 8 points (4 points to make a 2D square and extrude).
Now, after I made the shape, if I wanted to add another point partway up one
of the sides, I thought all I needed to do was click on the Add Point tool,
click on one of the existing points and drag up....

But more often than not, what will happen is, as soon as I click on an
existing point it will pick one of the 3 lines that terminate at that point
and make a double. So I'll end up with a point in the middle of the side but
on a second line and not the original.

Something like this:
________.___________.__________.
               ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This part will be another line, not the original.

I dont' know if this explains my question clearly enough or not...essentially
I need to know how I can add a point to an already existing line easily. Just
clicking on the line doesn't make the point part of the line...is there a hot
key or another technique to use????

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance.

If you DO reply, can you also send a copy to tim### [at] stratosnet as well? Thank
you.

Tim

Glad you could make it Takuya, keep this place bookmarked.

I seldom ever run sPatch but I think I know what you are talking
about. You said "click on an existing point", that would seem wrong.
To add a point in you should have a line selected I believe and then
click just where you want it on that line. Watch out for "snap to
grid" by the way.
That said I think you are going to need to look into using lines
connected across faces of the box (per your example). sPatch uses
lines across the faces to make them solid surfaces.
Anyway I'm probably not the right person to help, just thought I'd
speak up here and see if this is understood.
Rereading your message it's clearer to me, I recall that happening a
lot. I think what's happening is that you get your added vertex
(point) and are then expected to move it into position and connect a
line from there.
Then again I may be way off.

Having used sPatch a little I *might* have an idea. I think I know the
problem you're having and the procedure is rather trial-and-error (one
of the other problems you can get is adding a segment to the line
you're trying to add a point to on the "wrong" side of the existing
point).

However - there's possibly a sneak way to easily acheive what you
want. Try extruding not once but twice, then delete the middle point
from 3 of the extusion lines. check the OpenGL preview to make sure
sPatch is still filling in the sides (you may well need to draw
crossing lines to complete the shape).

Just an idea.
