Update:

A link to this detailed analysis of the vase has just been posted.

https://unsigned.io/granite-artifact/

I'll be out to work and then doing things this afternoon, but maybe if others
are interested, they can read, play with it, write some macros and scenes, etc.

Ok. I used this to apply to the vase in my studio setup.

1- I converted inches to centimeters
2- I used the following code by Alain to scale the vase to POV-unit scale:

http://news.povray.org/povray.newusers/thread/%3C60c8e000%241%40news.povray.org%3E/
3- I scaled the object the object to Real World sizes

The result is attached. Note that the grid on the pedestal is a 1 meter
square corresponding to 1 POV-unit. Subdivisions in 10 centimeter
squares. The grid was applied as an object pattern to the texture of the
pedestal.

To answer (part of) the questions of the author, see for instance:

Somehow, I am snowed under by all the messages on miscellaneous subjects
lately (and other matters) that I must have missed your contribution. :-/

I added the granite_21 texture and got this. Indeed, the mesh is as
smooth as the earlier/heavier ones.

So, what does it say about the /need/ for POV-Ray use of such a 'heavy'
mesh? I guess that for most cases we could do with less. It is a pity
that Poseray does not allow for simplifying meshes, only subdividing it
further (afaik).

The analysis is very thorough, are you the author of the pictures?

Paolo

Nope. That's Mark Qvist. I got in touch with him through github, and he's
supposed to get back to me sometime soon. :)

it is small. </grin>

had not realised earlier that a scale-correct 1:1 representation is the goal.
but in light of that, I'd argue that while it's a WIP, the highest possible
resolution, then scale down for use. (much like oversizing a render (gut
feeling))

Well, there is no specific goal afaiac, except if one wants to use
Granite_21 in a 'natural' way, then it might be important. However, that
is a choice and all options are free of course. ;-)

...and when we want to reproduce the object at its true size/aspect.

Well, there are different goals at different stages.

The first goal was to rapidly get a very nice looking render with the Granite_21
material to show off POV-Ray's textures and the potential for
near-photorealistic render quality.

The second is to poke around the mesh and examine whatever features may present
themselves, given that we have a very high quality mesh, and the tools to play
with normals, lighting, signal processing, trace (), and anything else you can
think of.

Here's a sort of uv-unwrapped render of the outer and inner surfaces, done with
trace (), 2 arrays, and 4 million triangles. I still need to correct the
scaling and positioning of the lower color_map. <eyroll>

wow, neat. (what do you (collective) make of the interior? paint?)
