Hi folks,
Ben from UnchartedX has just posted the stl file from a professional
metrological scan of a pre-dynastic rose quartz vase.
You can view the video and the one that precedes it to gain an appreciation of
exactly what this represents.
From a purely POV-Ray perspective, it would be great to get this rendered with
Thomas deGroot's Granite_21 textures, and maybe even post the results on YT and
other sites to show the capabilities of POV-Ray with regard to texture, finish,
normal, lighting, and sub-surface light transport.
The file is 44.6 MB, and it would be great if someone could convert it to a mesh
{} or preferably mesh2 {} object. You could likely post it on a free
file-hosting service for the next 30 days like I did with F. Lohmueller's
(partial) web archive.
https://unchartedx.com/site/2023/02/19/new-video-updates-to-the-vase-scan-responses-and-the-stl-file/
Thanks,
Bill "Bald Eagle" Walker

intrigued. my "home made" mesh2 .inc file requires 117M formatted, and 99M with
leading whitespace and separating commas removed. where does the extra 12M
saving come from? can you post (or mail) a copy of your mesh, please?
the granite look does suit.

HI, Thomas.
Very good job ! Looks very natural, texture is high-detailed. When you
finish the scene, could you please send it to me ? I will do HD
animation and put it on my Youtube's POV-Ray channel.
All the best,

Well that certainly put a smile on my face.
I was trying to get to sleep, and I started (continued) thinking,
"He's not going to be able to resist doing it...."
And sure enough - converted, textured, and rendered. :D
Thankfully, it's a mesh, and we can instantiate 30-40,000 of them to show how
easy it was to just bang these out with some sand and copper tools in our
copious amounts of uninterrupted free time without the need for a pesky lathe.
;)
'tis really a beautiful texture.
Thanks - off to shovel snow.

Of course I can't! I am unable to resist such a call ;-)

As you say. I was also thinking about those Egyptian craftsmen. I wonder
how long it took to make such a vase out of granite...

It is. Trying a couple of other things presently.

Good luck! You got a couple of nasty storms already this winter.

No problem. Available here for the next 30 days:

You do have Granite_21.mcr on your system, don't you?
I have made a small update to it, which makes it possible to call
texture{Granite_21} instead of material{Granite_21}. It is not entirely
ready to be posted yet though. Just don't uncomment the (new) Mat_Tex
command.
