Folks,
wiki.povray.org is now open for contributions. Currently there are two areas
that the public can edit: howto's and documentation. however we're not asking
for contributions to the documentation area yet as the main POV-Ray docs have
not been converted and submitted - hence, the docs section is not linked from
the navigation menu.
if there is need for areas other than the above please comment here or on the
main page discussion area (http://wiki.povray.org/content/Talk:Main_Page).
note: an account is required to edit any part of the wiki, including the
discussion pages.
before contributing content, please be aware of our editing guidelines
(http://wiki.povray.org/content/Help:Editing_Guidelines) and copyright policy
(http://wiki.povray.org/content/POV-Wiki:Copyrights).

I spotted this at the top of a page:
Warning: preg_match() [function.preg-match]: Unknown modifier 'p' in
/a/httpd/sites/wiki/export/includes/EditPage.php on line 645
To reproduce, go to your prefs and make sure "Prompt me when entering a
blank edit summary" is enabled. Then edit a page, and click save without
entering a summary. It will give the message as expected ("Reminder: You
have not provided an edit summary. If you click Save again, your edit
will be saved without one.") but there is that warning message on the
top of the page.

is there an anonymous account that I can use?
I really hate registering accounts to edit wiki. And it is a real pain to
remember so many different password and login.

Nope, we explicitly set things up to require authentication so as to
limit spamming.
I use Firefox, and it has the ability to save password/login info. I'd
go that route (and in fact have).

you know right, by login, my opportunity cost have just increased thus resulting
in me contributing less right? And if anyone were to spam here, we could always
revert back right to pre-spam? is it really justified? if a spammer wants to,
he can always automate and create dummy accounts to spam.
I use opera and fox for password, but then sometimes I just remembered something
and only have access to public terminals.
wiki allows anonymous edit but if some minor restrictions...

If you are serious about contributing, a login should be no burden at all.
Think about it, please: If, on the other hand you don't really care about
contributing, the work someone else needs to put into cleaning out the spam
caused by anonymous logins would outweigh the few anonymous contributions.
Thus, the overall net gain of anonymous logins is negative...

I agree. The signal to noise ratio needs to be kept to a minimum,
especially on things people might use for reference like a wiki.
For example, me. I'll be using it alot I would bet. Though I've used
Pov for years, I still need all the help I can get. Especially with
lighting. Hint, hint.
At any rate, passwords do help to keep down the riff-raff to some extent
and has been mentioned, Firefox will help to minimize the trouble. IE
will do this as well.
As a potential user, I'd appreciate it.

Most of the spam in Wikis is done using bots that don't login - and
there's a captcha component to creating an account, making it difficult
(if not impossible) to automate.
That's low-hanging fruit, and easy to deal with.
Counter that with the efforts of a volunteer team (remember that none of
us get paid to do this), going and reverting massive quantities of
automated spam posted to the wiki is something that nobody really has
time for.
Creating a login is easy if you're a human. Saving the user ID and
password is easy if you use your browser to save that info. It's not a
hardship, and the payoff is significant compared to the administrative
overhead of monitoring every change to see if it's spam.
Of course if you don't want to contribute, then don't - we'll miss the
contribution, but the login requirement is not going to go away - it was
a design specification for this implementation intended specifically to
deal with the pervasive spamming problem so common on totally open Wikis.
Unless, of course, you're willing to pay me $80K a year to revert spammed
posts so you can post anonymously, I'd be happy to give up my day job
(well, no, not really - I enjoy my job too much to give it up).
:-)
