Following the discussion last year on the subject of 'povray standard
include files' on this newsgroup
(see -
http://news.povray.org/povray.general/thread/%3Cweb.4558993a8d8f92ab3976a8750%40news.povray.org%3E/?ttop=248816&toff=300)
a new web site has been set up at http://lib.povray.org. This is to store
POV-Ray and Moray objects contributed by the community and distributed under
the Creative Commons LGPL license. Anyone can download objects. All it needs
now is lots of contributions. You'll need to register to contribute objects
(but this only takes a few minutes).

A new newsgroup - povray.object-collection has been set up on the
news.povray.org server to support anything you would like to discuss about
this collection.

Now, this is going to help me greatly to get ride of the laziness and
lack of inspiration... Many thanks!

This is good. A perfect medium through which I can release some mineral
macros :)

Such as announcements....

I'd like to thank Chris B for setting this up, and also those who assisted
him in testing and admin.

At this point the registration system for lib.povray.org is separate from
the main povray site; this will be changing shortly. You can register on
the lib site now if you wish but if you do it would help if you could use
the same email address as you do on povray.org (if you happen to have a
login there already), as this will assist us in the transition.

thanks,

-- Chris

since then, I've hardly touched povray or SDL, but now seems the time to put
POV4 thoughts on hold and start contributing real code of any kind... :)

I wonder if it could be a good idea to make the registration and
login pages SSL-secured. Not that it matters all that much, but still...

I submitted an entry, but didn't know that there could be some kind of
image thumbnail included too, so I didn't put one. How can I add it there
now?

At the moment only administrators can edit stuff once it's been submitted.
If you post one in povray.binaries.images we can copy that up for you.

Chris B.

What I did was to submit a "new version" with the proper image files.
I hope that's not a bad solution.

It would be really nice if the submitter could modify his submission
afterwards (eg. to add, remove or perhaps even rename files).

It could also be helpful if the submission page would warn that the
submission has no valid thumbnail and/or larger image. This would be
especially helpful for first-time users (like me :) ).

No. That's fine too, and I see you've used a small increment in the version
number, which is good as it makes it clear that it's a minor change.
I've suspended the older versions so that only the latest one shows up on
the search.

The reason for not being generally able to change anything without adjusting
the version number is that otherwise, anyone who has already downloaded the
object would not necessarily be able to detect that it had changed since
they received their copy.

There are however a couple of situations where it could be reasonable to
change things without updating the version number:
One is if you notice something pretty well straight away before anyone has
downloaded it. The other is where it has no material effect on the way the
contribution works (e.g. the Thumbnail image, the Description, Keywords and
Category classification). You happened to hit both at once :-). At present,
both need to be handled by the administrators. It may be possible to permit
some post-submission modifications by the contributor in the future with the
server checking that either no-one has downloaded it or that it's only a
meta-data change. I'll add it to the list of things to think about.

That should be doable. I'll look at doing that.

Chris B.
