I just wanted to test the qtvrpanorama.pov file in the qtvr directory and a
few annoying things came up :
- first, the "Make QTVR Panorama" free converter described in the file only
exists for MacOS http://developer.apple.com/quicktime/quicktimeintro/tools/.
It looks that the only way to do this on a non-Mac platform is to buy the
400$ QTVR authoring studio...
- second, I cannot find any freeware or shareware app that allows to turn a

QTVR support is either absent or paying).

I know there are other panorama viewers (java-based particularly) but before
I try them I would like to be sure that it is presently impossible to create
QTVR images - or at least QT panorama images - with free tools on another
platform than MacOS. Any idea or advice ?

Hello,

I know a piece of software which might help a little. Go to the 'panorama
tools' website at http://www.path.unimelb.edu.au/~dersch/. As far as I know
it's is not exactly what you are looking for, but you are able to view
panoramic images with it.

Yes, I've played with this one a little bit but it's a series of tools to
stitch and create panoramas images out of single pictures. To create QTVRs
out of it you still need to run your bitmap through the same Apple thingie
that is unavailable for non MacOS users or through much more expensive
software.
Something I don't get is that while I've been through quite a number of
panorama sites (with tutorials, comparisons of software etc.) I've seen none
stating clearly that what I (and probably other people) want is a simple,
free or very cheap utility to do this doesn't exist for non-Apple machines.

Why do you think QT is better than a applet like PTviewer?

Don't feel bad, it doesn't even really exist for Mac OS. (That's not a 
modern app, so in order to use it I would have to install the older OS 
environment. It would run "within" Mac OS X, but installing all of the 
older OS makes that app take up a pretty huge amount of space.)

I don't think it's better, but it's certainly more mainstream and I like the
idea of having standalone files that I (and the user) can play outside the
webpage. Also, my experiences with free java applets haven't been all
successful. I noted that the main PT page had been down for a while, which
is never a good sign in my book when it comes to choose a technology.

After some digging in Google and in my computer junk, I retrieved a now dead
piece of software called Spin Panorama (hidden in my Epson 750 installation
pack) that creates QTVR cylindrical panoramas. Still, I may end up using
PTviewer anyway as it supports more projection modes.

It certainly looks like Apple decided to kill the free, entry-level
authoring for QTVR... I've seen a lot of pages that made references to these
free tools for teachers (kids making panoramas from their field trips),
photographers hobbyists etc. and this doesn't seem really available now :( I
even seem to remember that the free version of QT came with authoring tools
at some time, but I could be mistaken.

Sure? I think java is more commonly installed than Quicktime, but I may 
be wrong. Also PTViewer IMHO gives better quality (panning is more evenly
and less flickering pixels).

There is a version of PTviewer that will also run as a standalone application.
In Windows you can also add an association "open with ptviewer" to jpeg files
so you can open them in PTviewer directly. 
(something like C:\WINDOWS\javaw.exe -jar "D:\ptviewer.jar" "%1")

Well, they are not more than executables of developer sample code ... maybe
I will find some time to take a look at the source code...
