Congratulation to Clipka!
It's really to late!

Did you use backside illumination there?

Because this happens to be /exactly/ my favorite use case for that
feature ;-) (see my other reply).

I congratulate Clipka too, but jhu likewise. The images are similiar but not
equal and both are wonderful. jhu gave us another interpretation of the same
theme and a good one. And IMO it's never to late for a nice image.

Best regards,
Michael

I suppose I should put more stats on this image.

1) It's all CSG, except for the water
2) 7.5 hours of rendering on a Phenom II x6 @ 3.2 GHz (I remember the days of
single core processors and being okay with week-long renders...). Leave it to
radiosity and focal_blur to raise render times.
3) The paper is two triangles using double_illumination. In front of those
triangles are another two filtered triangle to dim the light coming back out. I
had a hard time figuring out how to get this effect. Initially I was using some
blurred transparency, but that just looked like frosted glass. Then I tried
scattering media but couldn't get that to work either.
4) First image for 2013. Was hooked on video games this whole time.

Instead of the double_illumination, do try diffuse backside
illumination, activated by a second parameter to "diffuse", e.g.:

   finish { diffuse 0.7, 0.3 }

This does essentially the same as double_illumination except that you
can control the brightness.
