They are lasers beans!

Nice and strange AIR ships. Space ships don't need any wings or any
thing looking like wings as there is no air to travel through.
In fact, a space ship don't need to be nicely profiled, they can be
realy boxy with the function dictating the shape.

Laser ARE beams. Laser beam is a pleonasm.
Laser can be pulsed, it only mean that the beam is not continous.
Next, in space, a laser would be invisible unless it have an astronomic
power level, I mean, in the multi peta-watt range...
Given the speed of light, even short, high frequency, laser pulses
should be *MUCH* longer and you should only be able to see one, maybe
two at most, unless your scene covers 10000 Km or more. Then, your ships
would be so small and far away from each other that you won't be able to
apreciate them.

Rule #1 when nitpicking: Don't, until you know what you're talking
about, because you'll inevitably be out out-smartassed :-P
LASER = "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation" -
that's neither a beam, nor an apparatus, but a principle.
A proper term for a beam generated using this principle would be
"coherent beam of light" if all you want to describe is the properties
of the beam; but if you want to also reference the particular principle
used to generate it, "laser beam" would be perfectly appropriate (while
"laser light" would indeed be nonsense).
If you accept the acronym of the underlying principle to denote a beam
generated using it, then it is just as acceptable to denote an apparatus
using this principle to generate the beam - though of course "Laser
source" would be more precise.
Of course, propelling a volley of laser apparatuses would entirely be
possible, might look somewhat like depicted, and science fiction authors
might even invent /some/ reason for doing so, rather than just shooting
slugs of lead, tungsten or DU...

Whaowhaowhao...I have just made a picture, I don't want to know if it's real or
not... I don't care if lasers are or not visible, it's art! And with art all is
possible.

But they look really cool the way Fractracer does them.

It is like with the first cars, they came with a horse-drawn buggy
chassis. First generation space ships resemble airships for the same
reasons ;-) Later models diverged.
Interestingly, in the novels of E.E. 'Doc' Smith (Skylark series and
Lensman series) written between the 1920's and 1950's space ships were
often of spherical design initially, evolving to tear drop shape for
higher speeds through the 'ether'.

On planet Nekyo (Stars Fomalhaut) the Nekyans Space Ships are flying in
atmosphere and in space, they need wings when they approach to landing...

Nekyo of course, has solved the problem of hybrid powered ships, but
many planets are still struggling with it. We at Tellus still do not
master the technique efficiently. :-)

Re_worked version, always wings.
