It is like with the first cars, they came with a horse-drawn buggy
chassis. First generation space ships resemble airships for the same
reasons ;-) Later models diverged.
Interestingly, in the novels of E.E. 'Doc' Smith (Skylark series and
Lensman series) written between the 1920's and 1950's space ships were
often of spherical design initially, evolving to tear drop shape for
higher speeds through the 'ether'.
