What ho
I've had a play with using HDRI lighting instead of regular
background/radiosity/light_sources. Here's another classic space set, late 80s
I think but I can't find a ref for it. I expect I can improve the HDRI render,
but I think I prefer the bog-standard one (see second post), even if it is a
bit dark.
As can be seen, I got LSynth working on hoses. It only does a few types, but
luckily all the space sets use the same ribbed hose so that's OK. Took a bit of
trial and error but it's quite easy once you get the hang of it. I also added a
few more of Anton Raves' pieces to the lgeo library, most notably the
tailfin-with-engine featured in this model, and cleaned up the textures a bit
more.
....and I've got a large backlog of models to be rendered! :)

Er, whoops, sorry, forgot (or plain didn't realise) that it's esoteric
vernacular if you're not a brit. :-)
It's probably the wrong word anyway; in this context I meant "only lights,
photons and high-quality radiosity, nothing out of the ordinary" ... !

Just to add to the article there is a racist phrase I used to hear when I was
young in Glasgow, "Bog Irish" and there is the phrase "bog off" :)

I can't help it, but I *really* like the HDRI a lot more.
BTW your LEGO shots are really givig me the itches... you're gonna share the
extensions to the part libs?

Another nice render :) One nitpick is that it looks like it's floating. I
really liked this set when it came out. Have you modeled the little robot in
the back? I liked the form of the space ship although it eventually bothered
me that the cockpit wasn't fully enclosed around the pilot's legs. Still, it
was one of the favorite sets I owned. I notice the slight positioning
variation in the bricks that helps your eye distinguish between different ones.
Is that a feature of the modeler or a bit of randomness you added in SDL?

It does look more real, but the vivid nature of the reflections bother me
slightly. Those textures shouldn't be doing that!

Hmm, it's all a bit rough and ready really. The parts are already there,
technically, in Anton's .inc files. All that's required is to create a new
individual .inc file for each part to fit in with the lgeo framework. There are
about 20 parts already there (handy to see how it's done), but Anton's .inc file
has hundreds of others. I've only converted three so far, the classic space
helmet (193a), the car steering wheel (3829) and the tail fin with rocket
(4746). Here they are:

Just drop them into 'ldraw/lgeo/ar/' (assuming your library's installed in a
similar manner to mine - I'm on MacOSX). You also need to add 'A' entries in
the lg_elements.lst file, which tells l3p which parts are available - it's an
ASCII file, so just look at the other entries to see how to do it. The only
other thing to remember is to put the -ar option before -lgeo when running l3p;
it gives priority to the first option.
Converting the parts doesn't take long, but it's a little tedious cos you have
to make a test file, convert it to POV and then substitute the ar_****.inc file
and play with the transformations until the part's where you put it. I'm just
doing it whenever I notice a part obviously missing from lgeo - it tells you
which ones are missing when you run l3p. The render still works even if there
are missing parts, because l3p uses the low-res LDRAW default meshes if it
can't find lgeo or ar parts.
