Flattered, but does anyone have a more original mesh to put into the scene? I
think the HOF images should all show technique as well as artistic merit.
Needless to say, it would boost the latter of the two if it weren't just a
standard mesh on a simple background, in the style of a previous image. In
other words, "I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!"

Oh, and 2, 7, 8, 17, 18

AIUI, this shot was made with media effects to sim the SSS, so it can be done
with 3.6.1 as well...

But something that gives almost as good results at faster speed would be a great
thing of course.

Whoa, man! Thanks for taking your time to research into this. Nice
montage, some I've seen before but others are nice additions. p.b.i
really contain many gems... :)

Where can I find the dragon model? Is it available for free?

I second that!

Here's something to contemplate: Should the HOF showcase images that only show
off POV-Ray's impressive 'strengths'? Or should it also include POV images that
have pictorial beauty, regardless of what techniques were used? (Of course,
having both at the same time is the ideal; but they are different philosophical
concepts.) I kind of sense that the general attitude is for including, first and
foremost, the 'strengths' side of things. I don't disagree; but that may be
slighting some of the more intrinsically beautiful or complex images in p.b.i,
those that have great subject matter, composition or what-not, but which may
not have gobs of radiosity, depth-of-field, SSS, etc.

Either type of image would be most welcome, IMO.

It is available at both

http://graphics.stanford.edu/data/3Dscanrep/

and

http://www.cc.gatech.edu/projects/large_models/

My strategy for getting it into POV-Ray was to import the GA Tech .ply model
into Blender, then use my own converter from .obj to mesh2, although you could
export a .obj file into Wings3D, then export it into POV-Ray. There's nothing
difficult about it; it just takes a couple steps to find programs that
import/export the right formats.
