Hi all,
Well, I went a little crazy playing with the Ivy Generator a few days ago and
ended up with 70 different ivy meshes grown on this (rather simple) Sponza
Atrium mesh. All converted to Mesh2 via PoseRay.
Render examples follow...

Using the ambient occlusion method that I was obsessing on all week I first
rendered a lightless AO pass; then I used MegaPov to render a full-color HDRI
pass with one main light_source. Tons of focal blur samples. 49 hours for both
passes (ouch).
Finally I rendered a composite of the HDRI and AO renders. I was able to easily
tweak the balance of light and shadow during the composite render by varying a
single parameter between 0 and 1. I found this to much more artist-friendly than
re-rendering the whole thing again.
Here are some small sample tests, full-size render follows...

The previous 49 hours for the AO and HDRI passes don't make this realtime
raytracing by any stretch, but I really like being able to vary the blend of
AO-shadow and full-color until I'm satisified with it.
Here's the full-size composite render, which took about 10 seconds.
Cheers,
-Rob

The result has a very strong 3D feeling, mainly due I suppose to the
blurring. Really impressive.
I am not a big fan of focal blur in general. I wonder how the scene would
look without it?

The image looks stunning, but the exaggerated focal blur gives the impression
that we are looking at a miniature building, maybe 30cm high... if anything,
only the ivy in the extreme foreground (right-hand side) should be blurred.
Of course, that wasn't the point of your render, and I agree, being able to
tweak the light level in a quick apres-AO pass is very powerful. Great stuff!

This is one of the best uses of focal blur I have seen in a POV-Ray image.
Don't listen to those focal blur haters. It rules!

Didn't wrote anything for month'. Part of because I was busy moving from
Germany to Denmark.
But this image is stunning! It reminds me of the LOTR-Films (which I like
:-)) - it's even better!
Thanks,
Marc-Hendrik

I agree.
Excellent contrast. Cold.
I suggest a sky dark, purplish.
It would be interesting to also try the "Luminous Bloom" by Samuel Benge.
There are several minutes that I look the image!
