I was noticing places like http://www.vray-materials.de/ and
http://mxmgallery.maxwellrender.com/ has similar, standardised test objects to
use with material samples.

I wanted one for POV-Ray, so I coded one up. It's been nice to use as a test
object
for playing with materials, and also for light probes and my light dome code.

It still requires some work (like air bubbles to help show off transparent
materials, and another logo under the stem), but I'm finding it quite useful so
far.
I'd be happy to share it when it's done.

Oh, and the stem and bulb are an "sor" and "lathe", respectively, which means
they have automatic uv_mappings, which helps when testing 2D materials.

That is really nice.  Have you considered rendering it with photons for the
transparent material?

  How did you get the machine-turned finish?  Everything I've ever tried has
killed my rendering times.  I finally had to resort to just applying a
bump-map...George

I'll try to post the source soon, but it's just a repeating version of Rune's
brushed metal texture - see http://runevision.com/3d/povgoodies/ for his one.

I use a black and white bitmap to alternate between each overlapping circle, as
I can't think of a good way of doing it purely in the SDL.
