Having vastly improved my tetrahedral boulder, I've gone back to the whole
double planetoid again. Since my main motivation for tinkering was to speed up
the rendering (which succeeded completely), I rendered the whole scene at 3000
x 3000. It finished late last night, taking almost 115 hours on a single-core
2.4GHz AMD with the 64-bit linux POV-Ray 3.6.1.

There are some problems, mostly invisible on the 1200 x 1200 version shown here;
there are radiosity artifacts around some of the doorways and some of the
foliage is sticking through the buildings. This should be simple to correct,
which, technically, makes even this epic version a test render...

Since I'm still tinkering, comments are welcome! ;-)

Yes, I suppose this is a vast improvement indeed (render time I mean). The 
planetoid looks very well. If I remember correctly, there is no 
possibilities of communication between the human and the natural space, is 
there? If so, I am not too bothered by the vegetation growing inside those 
apparent gateways, otherwise that might be a bit distracting.

Well, I think that might have been mentioned by Escher of the original image,
but that's not how I see it. I'm going for the 'buildings on a rock' reality
(with a modified version of gravity...:-)).

That wasn't the problem actually; some foliage appears only on walls because the
bushes are at an angle and the base is inside the wall. This is one of the
things I'm going to change. Other changes: a dirty texture for the walls,
tweaked radiosity and an area_light. I did a quick test with a 5x5 area light
last night and it trebled the render time :-(

Oh well, shouldn't grumble, I did buy that linux box solely to put it in the
spare room and leave it rendering for weeks on end...

Yes, but what I point at are the rectangular gateways at the base of the 
towers on the planetoid. If they provide access to the rock, the entrances 
should be clear of vegetation, don't you think so?

Oh yes, but it is testing patience too :-)

your ability to design interesting art deco house styles. When looking to 
the housing construction, well, it is a design which is simple, basic, and 
still amazing.

That design applied to a large villa at some beach, wow - that should look 
just fine!

Ah, I see what you mean. That's interesting because I hadn't intended these
features as gateways, and I never noticed that they resemble such! I'm not sure
if you can make out the balcony to the right of the image, you can see that
there's just a plain wall underneath rather than a dark entrance...?

What do you find unconvincing - the rock geometry/texture, or the tetrahedral
shape? In the latter case I am constrained by the concept but I am not 100%
happy with the rock appearance myself. The problem is trading off realism with
render time...

Thanks! The simplicity is also necessitated by the concept - normal
building-dressing would be difficult for the varying 'up' direction.

A fortress-type look was what I had in mind, although not medieval because I'd
need to crenellate the walls!
