It does give that appearence, although I thought I might get away with it.
My
intention was to have the lichens kind of curl up at the edges, but instead
the appearence is that the whole lichen becomes depressed into the rock.
If I can straighten out the code, I'll try a couple of different approaches
to the surface texture to see if it is possible to resolve the issue.
I really wish I had some sort of GUI like WorldMachine for building up
textures - it's a real challange for me keeping it all straight in SDL and
in my head!

More or less inverted the bumps on the lichen texture to get rid of the
depression effect. Also generally made the overall roughness a little more
agressive.

much better than the first attempt, which was a much better rock than
anything I did for myself.
Hope, you'll post the code!

Excellent! I kind of liked the first one because I know moss likes to
grow in damp recesses, but this looks somewhat better.

I sort of like the first one better too, not sure why though.

Very nice! My very first impression, though, was that it looks like a big
chunk of a big mountain. Not sure why--perhaps the moss is in
too-clearly-delineated groups, especially in the 2nd image (the way
separated forest areas look, seen
from far away.) Other than that, the textures look great.

It took a while, but I posted the source files over in
povray.binaries.scene-files for those that want it.

Nice boulders, Abe. The POV rock collection is growing well. :)
